I also really loved Denmark, especially the countryside.

I'm wondering if Canadians get more vacation than Americans? I know that Europeans do. I don't care one way or another if some Americans don't want to travel, though. It's their money and their free time. I've also heard that French people vacation within their own country.

Sicile,
I totally agree with Tom's comments. Normal reasonable commonsense precautions in place, you have nothing to fear.
If travelling from Derry to the Giants Causeway, could I suggest you take the longer coast road. The views (and the road itself) on the Antrim coast are beautiful. As for the causeway itself, try to plan a visit at low tide as there is so much more to see. Allow time to take the cliff walk which will permit you to see the whole vista (about 90 minutes). As an aside, the site gave me the weirdest feeling (I can't describe the feeling in any other way -I lack the words) that I've ever had, and as an atheist I cannot explain it. If you visit, you might let me know what you think.
You may also wish to consider a day-trip to Rathlin Island.

Sicile - I actually like the wilder areas MORE than the SE, to be honest. I wouldn't worry too much about your safety in Northern Ireland, other than common-sense safety precautions you'd take anywhere. The Good Friday Accords have made a real difference up there. Obviously, if you're in a social situation with strangers (such as going down the pub), I would avoid religious or political conversations, because you never know where folks stand or what they've been through. Belfast has this thing called the Black Taxi Tour, which I highly recommend, and you will get a very nuanced picture of all of the sectarian troubles over the years.

Tom -I did swing up to Connemara when I was there last- it was so rocky and rugged. Very unlike the SE - I agree. The western coast along Dingle and Galway were just amazing. I really want to go back there too, but I've never seen Northern Ireland - I would love to see the giants causeway and check out some of N Ireland's history. Im a little concerned about safety though...And I wondered if that part was as pretty as the western shores. Thanks for the input!
