I'm wondering if Canadians get more vacation than Americans? I know that Europeans do. I don't care one way or another if some Americans don't want to travel, though. It's their money and their free time. I've also heard that French people vacation within their own country.

This is sad:

Why more Americans don't travel abroad

http://www.cnn.com/2011/TRAVEL/02/04/americans.travel.domestically/...

The 'we don't border enough countries excuse is ridiculous. Canada only borders one country, the US, yet 60% of Canadians have passports, whereas only 30% of Americans do. Canada is also a much bigger country with a lot more and diverse natural sites to visit, but Canadians still value going abroad as a part of their education and self-edification. The problem here is cultural. Americans have 'God bless America, wealthiest country in the world, everyone imitates our constitution, etc.' shoved down their throats as kids, and many (certainly not all) believe it their whole lives...

Sicile,
I totally agree with Tom's comments. Normal reasonable commonsense precautions in place, you have nothing to fear.
If travelling from Derry to the Giants Causeway, could I suggest you take the longer coast road. The views (and the road itself) on the Antrim coast are beautiful. As for the causeway itself, try to plan a visit at low tide as there is so much more to see. Allow time to take the cliff walk which will permit you to see the whole vista (about 90 minutes). As an aside, the site gave me the weirdest feeling (I can't describe the feeling in any other way -I lack the words) that I've ever had, and as an atheist I cannot explain it. If you visit, you might let me know what you think.
You may also wish to consider a day-trip to Rathlin Island.
