I wouldn't worry too much about your safety in Northern Ireland, other than common-sense safety precautions you'd take anywhere. The Good Friday Accords have made a real difference up there. Obviously, if you're in a social situation with strangers (such as going down the pub), I would avoid religious or political conversations, because you never know where folks stand or what they've been through. Belfast has this thing called the Black Taxi Tour, which I highly recommend, and you will get a very nuanced picture of all of the sectarian troubles over the years.

The western coast along Dingle and Galway were just amazing. I really want to go back there too, but I've never seen Northern Ireland - I would love to see the giants causeway and check out some of N Ireland's history. Im a little concerned about safety though...And I wondered if that part was as pretty as the western shores. Thanks for the input!

Comment by Tom Harris on October 21, 2010 at 7:37am: Sicile - I really enjoyed the northwest of Ireland, especially up in Connemara and into Counties Sligo and Donegal. It's a whole different world than the green, pastoral SE, more rugged and wild.

I must say that i was so impressed with the rocky mountain way of living. Its very laid back with a non judgmental attitude towards things such as sexual preference or religion.

If you are visiting, make sure an sample the wonderful assortment of micro-brews. From stouts to IPA's, there is a beer out there for you to enjoy. Just remember that the higher elevation makes your beer have a stronger kick than you might be used to.

Speaking of which, I took a 7-day cruise in April on Carnival Cruise Line out of Tampa, Florida to Grand Cayman; Cozumel, Mexico; Belize City, Belize and Isla Roatan, Honduras. If anyone's looking at travel in the Western Caribbean, I have been there.

Maybe this is not what this page is about, but if any of you want personal recommendations about places I've been to MORE THAN ONCE and have a reasonable knowledge of, feel free to ask.
Currently I feel able to give advice on travel in Ireland, France (Paris, Brittany, Normandy, the Dordogne), Netherlands (mainly Amsterdam), Belguim (Brussels, Bruges) Spain (Costa del Sol, Costa Brave) UK (London, Liverpool, Wales), Germany (Berlin, Cologne).
Perhaps this is not the purpose of this blog, if so, sorry.
