@Progressive Rock Girl
1) Faith in science? that's a problem for the both the critics and advocates. science is a method, a method for evaluating truths via induction about specific questions which allow quantitative measurement. those specific questions cannot encompass all of reality, and moreover, they require a sense of the world that serves a contextualizing function. phenomenologists like heidegger might call this 'being in the world', though you don't have to subscribe to his views about reality in order to appreicate the holism which any inquiry including scientific inquiry relies upon. so it is not a strong relativism i am advocating. i'm just criticizing ali for being so simplistic and dogmatic on unfair and contradictory grounds. i think it is brave and political, but not convincing as a philosophical argument. at times, her criticisms rest on assuming that all of the muslim world is of her family and culture--that is somalia and saudi arabia. It is not!!! In fact there are many Muslim thinkers, Muhammad Iqbal is exemplary, who would would never submit scientific inquiry and its truths to dogmatic power of traditionalist thinking.
2) Not all Muslims kill over cartoons or execute rape victims! Perhaps she would like everyone to think so.
3) Even traditional theologians like those in Shi'i Islam are very rational. Their methodology and training is based on dialectical reasoning. Moreover, if Ali does not have to accept the prejudices and wholesale ideas of the tradition she is advocating, what makes you think all 1 billion muslims do?
3) Nazi-ism was informed by eugenics and racial theories that were considered valid by most scientists at the time. Let's not forget the atrocities by state-led atheism across a variety of communist movements either. Moreover, if you consider their science and atheism perverted and illegitimate, then I would say there are many muslims who would say the same about killing over cartoons and executing rape victims.
4) I am an agnostic but would accept someone like William James' view of religious truth. It's test is in life, in the psychological function of living in the world. I would just vigorously defend the boundaries of natural science and human rights. Beyond that, it is a matter of being tolerant towards what I may not appreciate, just as many religious people do not appreciate my agnosticism and irreverence.
