I've been super busy with school this semester -- no time for Atheist Nexus, sadly!!
If anyone who's around here a lot wants me to toss them moderation privileges to run this group or anything, just send me (Sara) a message! Thanks!

Removed ability to send mass messages to everyone in the group. At 1000+ members, that seems like asking for spam.

Offer still open if anyone active in the group wants moderation privileges, but it appears everything has been going smoothly with all kinds of great discussions without moderation. Fantastic! :)

Joan, I'll watch that later. But those Perimeter Institute lectures are always good.

Seth Lloyd on Quantum Life

No reason quantum physics should be shunned, it begins to look understandable, even as it makes no sense to intuition.

Any physics people here? I posted something ages ago and I can't remember the name of the principle or law or whatever you call it.

The principle was that when two object come in contact with one another they cannot separate without leaving something of themselves behind. So when your oily hand touches a dirty surface, your hand leaves behind oil and skin cells but it has also picked up dirt from the surface.

It was named after the man who defined it.

Can anyone here help me with this? What is it called?

There were three rafts full of Sierra Club folk. The other two were down river and unable to paddle back against the current. Each raft had two professional oarsmen and ours tried to paddle us out but the eddy current turned us back into the eddy. We used everything we had that would serve as paddles and got up enough momentum to get out.

We paddle-powered purists would have been embarrassed to have a motor-powered raft tow us out. I think the fear of embarrassment energized us.

One oarsman had panpipes and played them at night. What sounds they made! One nurse was ecstatic when she realized she hadn't touched soap for a week.

Connecting the Neural Dots

As with all things scientific, there are benefits and perhaps hazards. Let's hope we concentrate on solving problems, not making another way to control and dominate people.

Spud, isn't this an amazing thing! I have never heard of this before.

Tom, getting caught in an eddy must be an adventure. Were you ... afraid? I think I would be terrified.

While floating the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon about 40 years ago, I was one of about 15 people on a paddle-powered raft that got caught in a large eddy. Getting out of it wasn't easy.

The trip was ineffable (too great to be described in words, which implies a second use for "effable").

Thanks Joan.  Until now, I've never heard on an Ice Circle.  Very interesting.
