Whether you're a professional, a student, an amateur, an enthusiast, whatever! Lots of atheists love science. Might as well have a group for it!

Feel free to nerd out, link articles, talk about your favorite field of research, whatever!

I've been super busy with school this semester -- no time for Atheist Nexus, sadly!!
If anyone who's around here a lot wants me to toss them moderation privileges to run this group or anything, just send me (Sara) a message! Thanks!

Removed ability to send mass messages to everyone in the group. At 1000+ members, that seems like asking for spam.

Offer still open if anyone active in the group wants moderation privileges, but it appears everything has been going smoothly with all kinds of great discussions without moderation. Fantastic! :)

Thanks Mrina. Glad you found it interesting. Life is such a splenderous and creative thing. This one just recently appeared on Yahoo: Scientists go 'gaga' to find creatures beneath 600 feet of ice

Woah no way!!! That is so cool!! I am going to show this to my mentor, he'll love it! Thanks again!! It begs the questions: what about in Europa's subsurface ocean? What about Enceladus' geysers? However the food source for these shrimp is a mystery- I can't imagine why they didn't sample the water and check for zooplankton? Or perhaps the shrimp somehow live off detritus, otherwise it's not impossible that there is some deep inlet from the Ocean- 12 miles isn't a lot and they only sampled a tiny hole. They can't completely rule out the possibility of there being no link to open water, as cool as it would be for these guys to be living independently of a marine source. Sorry to rant, that's brilliant though.

I agree. I imagine that there is some kind of circulation going on. And obviously, they are feeding on something. There's probably much more down there.

Isn't Lake Vostok just microorganisms though? I expect those everywhere, hehe. 3-inch shrimp is a different matter if the life is truly independent of a marine source.

Dr. Kaku's Universe

"Dr. Kaku's Universe" is a new blog created for Big Think by Dr. Michio Kaku, theoretical physicist at C.U.N.Y. and popular radio host. The blog explores cutting-edge science in all its remarkable strangeness, including the topics of string theory, time travel, parallel universes, and black holes.

Michio Kaku is a futurist, popularizer of science, and theoretical physicist, as well as a bestselling author and the host of two radio programs. He is the co-founder of string field theory (a branch of string theory), and continues Einstein’s search to unite the four fundamental forces of nature into one unified theory. He holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics and a joint appointment at City College of New York and the Graduate Center of C.U.N.Y. He is also a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Kaku launched his Big Think blog, "Dr. Kaku's Universe," in March 2010.

A friend of mine suggest that someone should make a buddy cop movie starting Neil deGrasse Tyson and Michio Kaku.

The problem with string theory, is the same with Multiple Universes,
there is no way to test the theory false. The same is said for the God concept. Maybe God is sleeping and created the human comedy for his wife's amusement?

Yes, for the theoretical physicist String has color and imagination.
It also has more solutions to its equations than cat has hair strains.
So it is not science and more metaphysics.

This should start up the free will vs determinism, classical vs quantum mechanics debates again: UCSB Physicists Show Theory of Quantum Mechanics Applies to the Mot...

Researchers at UC Santa Barbara have provided the first clear demonstration that the theory of quantum mechanics applies to the mechanical motion of an object large enough to be seen by the naked eye. Their work satisfies a longstanding goal among physicists.

Meet X-woman: a possible new species of human

The human family tree may be in for a dramatic rewrite. DNA collected from a fossilised finger bone from Siberia shows it belonged to a mysterious ancient hominid – perhaps a new species.

Weird worlds: The solar system's 10 strangest moons

Moons may bow to planets in terms of size, but in character they often outshine their stolid parents. The named moons of the solar system outnumber planets by more than 20 to 1, and they display a remarkable diversity. There are fully fledged worlds such as Titan, as complex as any planet. There are possible havens for life, such as the ice-crusted water world Europa. New mysteries surround even the smallest satellites, most recently the apparent flying saucers orbiting Saturn.

This year it will be four centuries since Galileo discovered Jupiter's four large satellites, at a stroke quintupling the number of moons then known to humanity.

Join Stephen Battersby for a tour of some of the most frigid, violent and downright strange worlds we have discovered since then.

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 7 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

Posted by Christy Stewart on May 20, 2013 at 2:17pm 6 Comments

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…
