Two friends manage some of the world's timekeeping infrastructure - they are working with many others to implement reliable sub-femtosecond timekeeping, which will have profound implications for much of what we do.  One interesting site:  http://www.nist.gov/pml/div688/grp00/1000improvement.cfm

I couldn't believe it until I came to the method they used, which was timing the frames with different pulses of light.  Still, it's impressive and sounds like it will have some beneficial uses.
