Welcome Steph. We are a quiet bunch, but I guess that's the point.

I've noticed you around in some other discussion groups and have found your comments refreshing.

I didn't know about this group. I don't hate anyone - so I belong here.

@Natalie
Research shows that chiropractic tx can help ameliorate back pain but no better than ibuprofen. But it can help a little. However, I agree that it, like acupuncture, does not work for the reasons offered by those methods.
Similarly, prayer can be comforting, but not because a god is listening.
I lived in Japan for 7 years and am a Japanese acupuncturist. I have as many stories of "working" as "not working". But I am sure if it works at all, it is not for the reasons given by acupuncturists ! :-)

I guess they'll just have to stick with tinge units, heat pads and anti inflammitories.  A bad back is a real curse.  I have a friend who broke her back as a teenager and she swears by her inversion table.

I am skeptical of acupuncture for 2 reasons: 1) there is no plausible mechanism by which it could possibly work, and 2) I was kindly given free acupuncture treatments for my asthma by my boss' wife, a certified acupuncturist, when I lived in Japan, and found absolutely no benefit from them.

@ Grace
Each treatment modality has its own limitations. Homeopathy, except for the placebo effect (which is huge), is useless. Acupuncture can help a little, but again, largely placebo -- and it is expensive and they keep you going. Sorry, not too hopeful, eh?

Just out of curiosity, how good is acupuncture or other alternative methods at managing chronic pain?  I have some family members with chronic pain who do not like to rely on pain meds.

@ Fred Werther:
Actually, I am very critical of Alternative medicine -- and since I am a former Acupuncturist and Homeopath, I know from whence I speak. But you are right I do see meditation techniques as very useful and science experiments have bore this out. However, meditative religious traditions are indeed as full of self-delusions as the rest.
Nuance & Complexity -- it is easy to make simple judgements, but they are rarely correct.

I don't hate religious people or religion. I may think it's silly, but a lot of things are silly.
