Is it just me or are atheists in Massachusetts generally not as active or verbal then they seem to be anywhere else? I was thinking about that: Does it have to do w/ the fact that the NE *generally* is more open-minded and maybe there's less of a need for such groups? I see rather large and active groups predominately in southern US states....

Thoughts?

To be honest, I haven't looked for a group, and I'm curious what the perceived goals of an atheist group would be. I live in Northampton, which is a very liberal place, even if its signature issues are more centered on gender and sexuality.

Although I won't make assumptions about your politics, I think in general MA is a liberal place, and as such hasn't had to confront some of the more serious issues facing less educated populations in the Deep South, for example, such as school prayer and teaching creationism.

Along those lines, when John Kerry was running for president, some friends and I volunteered for the New Hampshire campaign, where it was more likely to make a difference.

What do you think a Western MA atheist group should do? Kegger? Skydiving outing? Cow tipping?
You know... I ALWAYS wanted to do cow tipping (even though I think cows are generally pretty cute & probably do not appreciate the tipping)... :o)

Good question though. I don't know. For a while some time ago, a friend of mine and me tried to locate the actual opposite: (a) theist(s) who would be willing to debate. THAT is truly hard to find. We even went to a bible study group held by the Christadelphians. Their cookies were really good! Their bible study/explanations sucked. And I wasn't really there. At least to them. Or at least it felt like that to me, it appeared clearly to be geared towards the better, stronger, religious gender: Male! (grrrrr)

Anyway, skydiving sounds good as well. Other than that? I'm not sure. I'm also member of meetup.com and those atheist groups seem to like to eat & drink (brunching and dining).

BTW: I am in Noho quite often, especially now over the summer always a nice town to go to...

Just kidding about the cow tipping. I grew up on a non-functioning cattle farm, in that my parents were vegetarians and my dad inherited about six Black Angus (beef cattle) from his parents. I guess they reminded him of his childhood, so they stayed as pets.

If we can get anyone excited about hanging out, I'm all for getting drinks or whatever. Western MA is a small place - I'd be surprised if we didn't know some of the same people.
Well, well... looks like it'll be you and me getting drinks, judging by the immense response our conversation is getting! :o)
I think I need to push some ppl in here.......!

You hit the nail on the head about New Englanders being more open minded also more tolerant to differences.

Is anybody going to host a solstice picnic in W. Mass. this summer?
