A Statement of Postive Atheism

Atheists United is a positive atheist community. As such, we believe in equal treatment and opportunity among all people, regardless of race, world view, sex or sexual preference.

Another feature of positive atheism is the absence of dogma. Its founder Gora said, “The only imperative is honesty.”

Because of this distrust for catechisms and similar “moral laws,” we tolerate members and friends who may not share the tenets of positive atheism. So long as they do not pretend to speak for Atheists United or misrepresent our belief, they are welcome.

Atheists United now has a family group which is a boon for those of us with children. Check it out:

Gee, did everyone fall asleep here? Anyways, next week Cars4Causes is picking up my old car as a donation to Atheists United. It's a great way to support one of my favorite freethought organizations!

On Feb. 28, "The Great Agnostic" will be paying a visit to Los Angeles in the person of actor Richard McNally. His one-man show, A Visit With Robert Green Ingersoll, will be performed at 11 a.m. as the program for the general meeting of Atheists United in Hollywood. (more here)

This Sunday, January 24, Sean Faircloth, Executive Director of the Secular Coalition for America, will be in Los Angeles to discuss how the values of our nation's founders directly connect to the values of the secular movement and how theocratically-based injustices in American law are not a historical artifact -- but rather a stark current reality that we all have a moral obligation to address. The talk is entitled "One Nation Under the Constitution" and will be given at 11 a.m. at the Center for Inquiry-Los Angeles. (more here)

Atheists United's holiday display, which featured a gnome with the face of Charles Darwin, was vandalized overnight in Santa Monica's Pacific Park. It was the only display out of a large number (mostly church-sponsored nativity scenes, etc.) that was vandalized.

Today's Los Angeles Times has a great article featuring an interview with Atheist United President Bobbie Kirkhart by columnist Patt Morrison. I get a lot of pleasure out of reporting this because I'm an AU member and I'm lucky enough to get to see (and hear) this special lady at every meeting.

I joined AU upon first moving to California almost 20 years ago. I've never been to a meeting, though, because I'm too far away.

Getting atheists to work together in an organized manner is no longer like "herding cats" in the manner it once was, thank goodness. We need to lean on each other because we have no one else, in large measure, besides the humanist groups that give a flying hoot about us.

You can discount the politicians altogether, sad to say.

Glad to be aboard.

Wyoming is better than the southeast, from what I've seen. It's still a solid red state, though. My big point was that there are no cities. The closest it has are Cheyenne and Casper, each of which are around 50,000 people. The entire state barely…
