Unfortunately, Mike has pulled out of the race. I hope his short campaign raised some awareness, though.
Comment by Secular Forces 2013 on June 14, 2012 at 7:13am Good news!

Mike Smith is an attorney running for District 69 in the Georgia House of Representatives, and he's openly atheist. What's more, he's in favor of marijuana legalization. The slogan on his websitereads: "Rational Representation for the 99%." And this is why he doesn't want your money:
"I do not want to accept contributions because the only way to stop the corrupting influence of money in politics is to stop the flow of money.
We need public finance of all election campaigns, and we need to make all political contributions illegal. I have been told by a political consultant that the best I can expect to do is to lose by a landslide. But, I have another idea. I think this campaign is about new ideas, not about old money.
The only way I see to win the election is for real people to get excited about new ideas like those I have discussed. We have the right to vote, and we can control our legislators."
Comment by Dean Loring on May 5, 2012 at 12:06pm Hi all. I live in Boca, and teach in Davie and Lake Worth. Hope to see some of you at a meeting somewhere sometime.
Comment by Nathan Hevenstone on September 26, 2011 at 5:43pm So... no one's going? Seriously?
Come on. Somebody has to be going who can give me a ride...
Please?
Comment by Nathan Hevenstone on September 20, 2011 at 3:31pm How come no one's said anything about this, yet? Richard Dawkins is going to be speaking at the University of Miami, Coral Gables campus, on Friday, September 30, at 5. The event is free.

I would love to go, but would need a ride. Is anyone coming from or near Boca Raton and can swing by Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton campus to pick me up, then get me back to SW 18th? I don't have cash, but I'd be happy to use my card to get you some gas on the way there or back (find a Shell and I can even get a small discount, I think). Please? I really want to go!

In regard to the guitar course at FLVS, I thought about making a formal complaint but my sons don’t want me to do it. They are very kind and respectful kids, and excellent students too, but they think that if I say something about it to the school authorities, their teachers (most of them are Christian) would find out that they are not “believers” and would have a bad opinion of them. They are afraid that in retaliation for my complaint (if I make one) their teachers are going to treat them badly. It’s sad, frustrating, and frightening, too. In that online public school, students are required to post personal responses and opinions on a discussion board and reply to other students postings. Courses such as Science, History, and Language have lessons that require it as part of their assignments. I remember when one of my sons was in 7th or 8th grade; he had to post his assignment (I think it was for a U.S. History lesson) on the discussion board, and I, just out of curiosity asked my son to let me read what other students had posted. I couldn’t believe the things students had written there; it seemed that it was a Bible/religion course not a history class. It happened that brainwashed “Christian” kids had been using the discussion board to proselytize, and some of their postings and replies were very disturbing, they said/wrote things like: If you don't serve God and Jesus you are going to be punished and condemned to burn in eternal fire in hell; they also said/wrote that unbelievers are demon possessed, and that atheists are evil, and other things like that... It seems that teachers don’t monitor what students are posting on the board, or it could be that teachers are Christians and like what Christian students are doing (proselytizing, etc), either way, it is something to be concerned about.
