Heh, yeah, there's a reason why there have been almost no new religious arguments for the past several hundred years.  The best I've ever gotten is Thomas Aquinas's proofs and Pascal's Wager.  Most people never even come close to touching upon a logical argument and try to argue blindly from the authority of the Bible ... often saying things that aren't even in the Bible or saying things about God that are flatly contradicted by the Bible.

@ Arizona I don't remember anyone trying to ever "save" me but at the same time when someone approaches me with a religious claim I can usually make short work of it. I might have scared them off with my background knowledge before they had a real chance to think I didn't know what I was taking about.

 

@ John, I don't know if I would associate atheism with intelligence even in the looses of sense. I've personally met some dumb atheists regretfully. If religion does falls out of favor for atheism there might come a point where people are just born and raised atheistic, kinda like how most people now are just born and raised religious, but without the critical thinking skills to refute false claims.

Laura, I think what you're seeing with the Pagans isn't necessarily anything to do with something inherent to their faith.  I mean hell, some of them worship war gods.  So do the Christians (read up on the Ugarit pantheon, of which Yahweh was a member), but that's another matter.

 

Rather, it has to do with the fact that they're a much smaller minority than we are.  You can only do so much oppressing when you're outnumbered 100 to 1.

@Katie  Yea, I am listed as Atheist on a dating site i am on.  I have been called some of the same names.  I even had one girl on there that made me her mission to save. . . and wouldn't leave me alone.  And what I love the most is when they don't list a religion or list as

'Non religious" and then go off on you when you send them a message.  But stay strong and welcome to the site!!

I used to always say I was Agnostic until I read Rational Responders and found I was really an Atheist. I said it to a few people and got such a different reaction I switched back to Agnostic for the general public. But since the person I’m talking to definition of agnostic is really atheist, I’m not lying, I’m just translating to their vernacular.

 

I do have a different background than most Atheists in that I was raised Atheist and most of my family are Atheists (we are all concerned about my 23 yo niece that has become Christian). My parents were active in the Unitarian Universalist community and if you know anything about UU’s, there are many Atheists there. It does depend on which church and 2 UU churches in the same area can be very different.

yeah at least religion weeds out the stupid people.  I mean, in the distant future everyone will be atheist (I hope.. or else humanity will fuck itself) but at least right now atheism is a sign of intelligence.  I think.

 

Anyway, my face hits palm when girls list "The Bible" as their only favorite book.

Another note, people will treat you differently, at least I have seen it...maybe some day there will be enough atheists or thinkers in the US to be common, but not yet.

I think the problem is, with dating sites, as well as any online community site, that letting people know you are an atheist, especially in the south, is like coming out gay, or worse. My being an atheist is a choice I made because I can think, not a natural condition. So, some of my friends think I will re-think and become a theist....but I have been an atheist since I was 12 or so, now 46, but now I am not too afraid of letting people know the truth. Shocks them that I am a nice guy and have not murdered anyone in the last 5 minutes or so......

@Katie. I dunno what's worse, a secular Catholic mom or an uber Catholic mom who agrees with EVERYTHING the pope says (and has no idea why people don't like him and are always persecuting Catholics), goes to church every day and "prays herself to sleep" at night. I have the later.

On dating sites, I've listed myself as atheist and got no negative emails but 90% of the guys who wanted to date me listed as Christian. Seems no one bothered to read my profile or they simply didn't care. But, as you said, unacceptable.
