Maybe, Ecce, but that isn't to say it's a bad idea to weigh atheism as a beneficial quality when you're dating someone.

One® Condoms seeks to provide everyone with the tools they need to not only educate themselves regarding sexual health, but to influence and engage the people they care about. In support of this goal, we donate 5% of sales in support of programs that educate the public and empower consumers to share their knowledge with others. You can assist us with our mission by participating in one or more of the following programs:

Take the Safer Sex Oath
One® Condoms has introduced an initiative to encourage public support for comprehensive safer sex programs that include accurate information about condoms.

Communicate About Sex
One® Condoms is happy to provide assistance when talking with your families, partners and peers about sex. These helpful guides will provide you with tools and strategies to lead discussion at every stage of your life.

Mission Statement
One® Condoms is committed to the safety, education and preservation of the communities in which our customers, partners and employees live. This commitment reflects a company-wide dedication to create innovative products and programs that substantially decrease barriers to the adoption of safer sex practices, including the use of condoms.

We strive to preserve the health of our communities by donating 5% of product sales in support of organizations that educate consumers with regard to their health and empower the public to share their knowledge with others. We welcome and support a wide variety of partner organizations, and encourage the development of programs that speak to the diversity of their clients. We also seek to develop innovative educational tools and social strategies that motive individuals to engage their families, partners and peers in informed conversations about sexual health.

In addition to financial support, each employee at One® Condoms invests personal time and energy to impact their community in positive ways. We believe that hands-on experience and an understanding of the complexity of sexual health outreach is vital to the success of our company, and our employees donate thousands of hours in support of organizations around the world. Our company is managed by individuals who not only are passionate about sexual health, but who are also committed to engaging in discourses about sexual health.

To us, responsible sexual health is the foundation upon which healthy and fulfilling sexual lives are built.

My ex-wife was very religious. It was a very relaxing 3 hours for me to sit on the couch or look at porn.

Myself, I know I couldn't have a relationship with anyone any more religious than the American standard archetype of an atheist in practice and a deist in discussion. Even then, my potent attitude of ridicule would result in a pretty ugly breakup unless I managed to get her off the fence and onto my side.

So, yeah, that kinda makes my new pick-up line "Are you an atheist?"

Agreed, but the degree to which a Christian can put that aside determines how conservative they really are. Love is funny though. It is possible, I agree. I just wonder about all the cognitive dissonance involved.

Ecce: It is totally possible for someone who is not religious, and a super conservative christian to get along perfectly well.

I daresay a combination that extreme in polarity might not last. Especially when one party believes the other is doomed to go to hell if they do not "repent."

Plus, the superiority complexes on both sides will not make for extra harmony. ;-)

Funny you should mention cancer patient. The author of Bright-Sided is a writer with a background in cell biology who had a bout with breast cancer. It figures into the book.

I mean even the most hardened of Western doctors will agree; all other things being equal, the cancer patient with a positive, fighter attitude will generally do better than the one with the negative, defeatist attitude.

When it gets dangerous is when the New Agers start replacing - rather than supplementing - real treatments for "Wish your troubles away."

I have a sister who's very into that. Everything wrong in my life is because I just don't think happy enough. Of course, ask her why her own life is fucked up and you'll get a paranoid diatribe of how-dare-you-turn-this-on-me, but...

Being surrounded by quite a bit of New Age, it's mind-boggling how many ways people can take the very good (and legitimate) advice of "Live well, think positive," and market it as a magical cure-all that can be yours for just a few hundred/thousand dollars...

Dallas: This book has been recommended to me several times:

Add another recommendation. A great book. An interesting look into positive psychology, a glimpse at the megachurch movement, and how we're still not far enough from the poison of John Calvin.
