I don't think anyone here is on the same page...

Brandon, coming from you that's quite the statement...

This ridicule concept isn't bound to do any good. even if someone "changes camps" so-to-speak, they're not even doing it for themselves. They've essentially gone from being a Christian Sheep to an Atheist Sheep. The very problem most religious types have with atheists is that we tend to be insulting, arrogant pricks. Since when does being a dick make things better than being friendly? You attack people just to change their minds on something without actually discussing it with them? Plugging your ears and humming loudly is still the same thing regardless of your beliefs.

well..... no, I didn't misunderstand.... :)

So when you meet a really sexist/religious/racist person anywhere in real life or online (not pointing fingers here) you never belittle? I'll say I sometimes do.....

There was an ongoing debate recently on several venues, on which is more effective at making believers see their lunacy... nice gentle accomodationism, or harder bitter laughter and ridicule. Some people changed camps, some didn't, the larger question will never be resolved. Ridiculing (pretty darned close to belittling) religious people publicly can sometimes be effective at helping religious people see the ridicule of their beliefs. The belittling of a religious person by an atheist is a weak stance? no... it's just how different individuals chose to cope with imbecility.

I really truly think that a singles group within an atheist group should be sexism free, that's a battle I find worthwhile.

I think this is a problem most atheists have (myself included). We tend to be over-analytical and dismissive (word of the day I guess). It comes through in our communication and we end up offending people that we never intended to with our cold logic.

Lee, I agree on the first half but not the second. I don't waste time 'educating' flat earthers, or believers, or racists, or sexists, or any other group of people I disagree with. It's certainly NOT because the "stance is weak". Some people just don't care to spend the extra time, often wasted extra time, on trying to educate people. Some do. It's their prerogative and does not diminish the value of an opinion.

I never considered that an insult. We're all presumptuous from time to time. It was an accurate descriptor for what I saw her doing. If that is insulting to her, then I was unaware until this moment. Admittedly, the connotation of the word is usually negative, but I was just calling it as I saw it.

How does being a lesbian or not relevant to this conversation?

Comment by TNT666 on December 30, 2011 at 1:29pm

Ok Brandon, you wanna play math? YOU threw the first insult by calling Maruli "presumptuous" in your very post here. So there. Your very first post attacked Maruli's opinion rather than the youtube item. You should at least have the decency to fess up to that instead of sheepishly trying to lie your way out of this.
