I want to be able to "have free conversations," too.  I will note that it's helpful, if you're going to do that in a relationship, to be deliberately hard to offend, and to be involved with someone who's deliberately hard to offend.  A man is quickly going to learn what not to say if his saying something makes his companion mad--and especially if it makes her unsexual.

 

Of course, I believe in being deliberately hard to offend, anyway, because I know that I am not a mind reader and I know that other people aren't mind readers, either, and because I assume that most people, most of the time, aren't *trying* to give offense.  And, being someone who values truth highly, I want to hear the truth. 

 

Naturally--it should go without saying--speaking the truth as a matter of fact is not the same as speaking the truth as a personal attack.  I assume personal attacks were not at issue here.

Eww, yeah, summaries of extracted stories.  They feed the same thing to Christians throughout elementary school.  That's where you get the stories extolling the infinite goodness of God for saving Noah and his family, conveniently ignoring the fact that it was God who killed everyone else.  Strangely, they also left out the part about Noah drunk, naked, in the tent, after they landed back on dry land, and how he cursed his one son for seeing him naked.

 

That's the advantage of reading the whole thing.  You see all of the horrifying bits that they leave out, when they're selling the stories to the sheep.  It gives you the second angle of attack.  Not only is this stuff mostly fiction, but it's immoral, horrifying crap as well.

 

You're right, though.  A lot of it is very badly written.  The historical books are at least a bit more interesting.

I've never actually read the bible from cover to cover.  Hebrew school never actually had us read any part of it, although they did summarize some stories extracted from it to us.  I started to read it but I got tired of it, and it was so boring and so full of vagueness, casuistry, and using too many words to say the things I think could have been said with half or less words. 

 

But the bible has nothing to do with why I became an atheist; I came home from school one day when I was 15, and there was a lamp next to my bed that wasn't there when I left; it was too surprising and scary and almost immediately I thought god must have provided it, but when my mother came home from work at 9:30 or 10:30 pm I found out that she bought two new lamps before work for my parents bedroom and put an old remaining working one in my bedroom because she remembered me saying once that I wanted one next to my bed...  so my mother provided the lamp and not god and then I knew there was no god, and I was disappointed yet I also knew it would have been too scary and unnatural if it had turned out that there really was a god.

ive converted two girl friends to atheism. i did so through constant unwavering persistant assaults of reason and ridicule of religion. similar to the determination i show in trying to get them in the sack... lolz :)

Yeah, I've run into the same sort of thing, dating Christians, before I realized what a horribly bad idea it was.  You get about 2 or 3 months into the relationship, and then they start wondering why you don't want to go to church with them.  At least that's always the way it's worked with me.

 

I think that lots of Christians truly do believe that everyone believes in God, and atheists just don't want to follow him, because ... I dunno, whatever reason they feed themselves.  They must figure that after we've got a sufficient emotional commitment to the relationship that they can start exerting influence, and they can 'bring us back to Jesus'.

 

I've read the Bible ... cover to cover, with the exception of a little skimming over I did through parts of Numbers, the Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Wisdom.  Song of Songs was also pretty painful, but it was short.  The Wisdom books after Job are pretty mindless.

Reading the Bible has done nothing but reinforce my stance about what a horrifying, immoral, made-up piece of crap Christianity is.  The New Testament is only slightly less horrible than the Old.

Im so sick of dating people that say they dont care about religion but they really do (liars) and then later into the relationship it falls apart because I am very set in my ways. It was funny when I recently got into an argument and the guy said to read the NT cuz it will "change my life" (laughable) I said "so I already read old bullshit now you want me to read new bullshit too-F*** Off!

I was in boy scouts from about 5-10th grade, although I lost interest and didn't do half the activities after 8th grade.  Once at a camping trip they said some christian prayer and bowed their heads before eating and I just stared ahead.  For one session I went to a week long scout camp and they all went somewhere to do some non-denominational christian service or prayer, but I said I was Jewish and they let me skip it and hang around my troops tents...

 

I never did do all the Jewish stuff I thought I was supposed to do that I was taught in Hebrew school, because my parents were less observant than the hebrew school teachers and I didn't want anybody to think I was crazy.

Well, then go to church with them ... and laugh when they say something silly ... loudly.
