I'd think more atheists who've struggled with addiction and found a way out would reach back and help out.

The religious 12-steppers have us beat there. Is it just because there's more of them than us? Do they care more?

I'm tired of being the only non-prayer at meetings. Where's the addict who's sober and not doing meetings? And where the f- are they? Instead of ranting on some Internet board about how f-ed up AA is maybe they could write a goddamn book and share the cure.

--- Just came from Dawkin's site, which I love reading, and stupidly took a moment to scroll through the silly AA thread. I'd have been better off f-ing praying for serenity. To think that being addicted to AA meetings is worse than drugs. Puleeze. But the person who said that her family members had lost a lot of time in meetings - now that I'd like to know more about. Did they quit? Are they sober? What do they think about their 12-step experience now.

Yeah. Me too. I'd checked in and was bummed that there hadn't been more activity, then I thought that was pretty lame 'cause I wasn't talking either.
You are right! AA bashing is fruitless. If I still considered myself an AA member, today would be my 19th "birthday." A lifelong atheist, I thought my life was over when I stumbled into AA and read the steps on the wall. I hung around, though, sobering up by hanging out with a group of recovering guys and just not drinking. Steps were out of the question, for obvious reasons.

I'm not one who can juxtapose some internal whatever for "god" of AA, so I never seriously worked anything, what I did do was read every scrap of AA literature, and, over the years, mixed in a little Zen to what became my own thing.

Know what? Studies have shown that 75% of people who recover from addictions do so absolutely on their own with no help whatsoever. No pills, patches self-help groups or anything else. I stopped going to AA about 5 years ago, and 3 years ago discovered SMART Recovery, where I am now facilitating a face-to-face meeting in Wilmington, NC.

Is this what you were looking for? An AA alternative based upon scientific principals? Well, check it out, it's the best I've seen yet, at least it's the most consistent, and it's not based on magic or the supernatural.

Good luck!
