Turk degilim ama biraz Turkce biliyorum -- dibilim docentiyim ve Turk dili ile ilgileniyorum -- biraz Ozbekce ve Kirgizca biliyorum. New Yorkluyum ama uzun zamandir Avustralya'da oturuyorum. Birkac defa ODTU'de kaldim.

Erdogan and Gul are fundemantalists, not moderate Muslims. They created local pressure (called as 'mahalle baskisi' written on newpapers). This increased intolerance against atheists and seculars.

Welcome Reha. What specifically has the new government, under Prime Minister Erdogan and President Gul, done to roll back religious freedoms or otherwise, I'm curious to know?

Atheist people in Turkey are afraid of declaring that they are atheist. Atheists group is the least tolerable minority in Turkey now. There is a so called Muslim democrat party in government / power since 2002. Freedom has went back a century in the last decade. To me, being an atheist is only political struggle to die. I write Turkish atheist texts in blogs. For example: rehaulku.blogcu.com.

Hello all, I am not Turkish, but my wife is. I went there for the first time about 2 years ago. Our family lived in Istanbul for 2 1/2 months, and we have been back periodically. Its a beautiful city and with some very nice people. I am learning a little Turkish myself, not much but its something. Would love to hear about any of your experiences with being/becoming atheist as Turks!

Hi! I'm not Turkish, nor am I from Turkey, but I love to see new groups get started and become active. If you have the time, one way to get new members to join this group is to do an advanced member search, and plug in different ways of writing "Turkey" in the country section. When I searched for "Turkey" in the country section, I came up with 24 people. Someone with a wee bit of time could invite these folks to the group by leaving an invitational link on their comment wall.
