Atheist News Podcast Project

Hey guys.

I probably shouldn't put this off anymore, so I'm just going to jump on it and improvise. I'm pretty sure the show is over. It was a ton of fun doing it, but with work and my son and my wife in school I simply don't have time to do it anymore.

Other folks have offered to take over but I don't really feel comfortable with that. Quit while you're ahead, sez I.

Anyhow, I payed for another year of hosting, so the archive of podcasts will be available for at least that long.

I really enjoyed podcasting, so I might do something again in the future. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks guys and gals! It was AMAZING.

Love,

--Joe

If you want to get really pissed off, check out the web site behind the billboard here. Going to this guy's book section, he claims "Although racism did not begin with Darwinism, Darwin did more than any person to popularize it. - from Darwin’s Plantation". The fiction in this website is amazing, and infuriating.

Wow, that's extremely offensive. As if my disbelief in a non-existent invisible man would make me any more likely to kill someone that actually does exist... Where is that billboard anyway?

@moJoe: Just need the stats on this one I think. I would be surprised to learn that atheists are overrepresented in gun related crimes. I'd expect that it would be the opposite.

I think we should put a revolver in our next atheist campaign.

isstpuzzlepc's secret image is a triquetra. It's a common pre-Christian (pagan) symbol, particularly in Celtic areas and Sicily, but it spread across Europe -- a version of it is on the Sicilian flag. There's a giant one inscribed on a boulder outside the entrance of Newgrange in Ireland, a sacred burial chamber that's older than the pyramids.

It's still a common official symbol in Ireland and the Isle of Man. In some places, Christian iconography adopted it and made it into three intersected vesica piscis to represent the trinity. It's like St. Patrick using a shamrock to represent the trinity (which is a legend); the shamrock was already important to the pagan Irish (the number 3 was important), and the church adopted their symbol, just like they blessed sacred pagan wells and built churches over them. It was a way of kicking the local tradition to the curb by assimilating their symbols, rather like mass media assimilates the counter-culture until there's no counter-culture left.

But it's not uncommon to adopt elements of a foreign culture when two cultures come into contact with each other. Tomatoes don't come from Europe, but who can imagine pasta or pizza without tomato sauce? Beowulf is full of cultural adoption, where the scribe (who was a Christian monk) takes pagan Scandinavian elements and puts a Christian spin on them. It's salesmanship.

Besides, no matter what faith tradition you look at, there's always going to be an extension of previously-existing material; the old testament is filled with it (the Hebrew month Tammuz was once a Babylonian god). So is the new, actually. Not sure how that makes for a secret cabal by the masters of the universe, though; its more like that's how cultures adapt and grow when they interact. See syncretism.

Why do I feel like I'm hollering down an empty hallway?
