North Central High School will put on a production this weekend of "The Laramie Project," the powerful but controversial play about the effects of Matthew Shepard's death on the small town of Laramie, Wyo. Shepard, a gay college student, drew national attention after he was savagely beaten in 1998 and left to die in a field. A New York theater company went to the town to interview the residents and try to figure out how that could happen. The result was "The Laramie Project." As with at other stagings of the play, the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., has threatened to protest the event.
