How shocking - Catholic priests implicated in child abuse.  What is the world coming to?

Nothing new here... moving on. This story was on the very last page, as a tiny paragraph in the margin of the paper this house subscribes to, the Times Colonist.

 

Most Catholics will remain so (catholic) because they are sheep and proud of it. It doesn't matter how many heinous crimes the representatives of religion seem to commit, the revenues and ideology appear to escape unscathed.

That may be true elsewhere, but I've read reports that the catholic church in Ireland is shrinking at a phenomenal rate, mostly because of the sex scandals that have emerged in the last decade or more. So that has to be good news.

And politicians are no longer deferring to the church, as they had always done in the past. In fact, this latest report has inspired a government minister to confront even the sanctity of the confessional:

 

"Irish Justice Minister Alan Shatter announced his intention to regulate the Catholic Church following the publication on Wednesday of a damning report into the handling of sex abuse in County Cork.

The Cloyne Report found that allegations of abuse by priests made since 1996 had not been properly handled by the then Bishop of the Diocese, John Magee.

In his tough response to the report, Mr Shatter announced his intention to introduce legislation later this year which would make it an offence to withhold information about child abuse from the authorities.

Under the new legislation, cardinals, bishops, priests and nuns would be prosecuted for failing to disclose or report instances of clerical child abuse.

Failure to do so could result in a five-year prison term.

And in a move which some Catholic clergy have admitted came as a surprise, the justice minister said he would not exclude the priest-penitent confidentiality of the Confession box."

Maybe this is all the beginning of the end of the grip the catholic church has held the Irish people in for so long, to their detriment. I sure hope so.

Yeah criminals with: a global empire based on childhood indoctrination (mind control), a capital city, and a strange immunity from modern values, and common sense. Religious dictatorships or theocracies are amazing in their ability to avoid the negative stigma associated with secular or military dictatorships. Hell the pope is still visited to this day by the highest state officials from all around the world, and was recently invited to Britain to have talks on the reunification of the Anglican and Catholic church. It's sickening.
