Iranian homosexuals carve out a refuge in Turkey

KAYSERI, Turkey — The salmon-colored building has seen better days. Paint peels from the moldy facades. Pieces of cardboard, newspaper and plastic cover the many missing windows — not worth replacing, because the neighborhood kids, who know this as "the gay building," will just smash them again.

The two-story building in Kayseri's Fez Kichak neighborhood has become an informal halfway-house for Iranian homosexuals fleeing torment in their homeland and hoping to make it to the West.

Homosexuality is punishable by death in Iran, and human rights groups estimate some 4,000 gays have been executed since the Islamic revolution in 1979. [...]

Holy SHIT! I knew it was bad but 4000!!
Welcome to Sharia. What a sad article. We take for granted that we won't be executed for sexual orientation. Murdered by some homophobe, maybe.

It's being used as a witch hunt, with forced confessions.

I didn't know that in Iran getting a sexchange was an acceptable way to deal with being gay. I also really wonder how a person in such a society actually meets partners.
If human rights organizations and/or Amnesty International aren't already all over Iran's case, they damned well should be. This added to Iran's bigotry against any non-muslim (gad, could an atheist so much as lift his head in Iran???) should put the crosshairs on Ahmadinejad and Khamenei and keep the pressure on them until they are GONE.
Here is a link to the Toronto organization that is a major force in helping queer Iranians:

Under Khomeni - Iran had the MOST sex change operations per year ... Curious, isn't it.
It seems like the ONLY acceptable way to deal with being gay- which is pretty fucked up!
I watched a documentary called 'Jihad for Love' - which I actually found at Blockbuster (!!!)
it was an amazing window into what it is like to be Muslim and gay/lesbian, and how people escape.
Seems odd that the men who raped this guy didn't get in trouble for being homosexual.
Because only homosexual rape other homosexuals?
