I'm sure it was a loving, Christian car bomb, which is why the Church and U.K. government covered it up.

Catholic Church and U.K. Government in Bomb Coverup

CLAUDY, Northern Ireland (Reuters) – The British government and the Catholic Church colluded to protect a priest suspected of involvement in a 1972 bombing in Northern Ireland that killed 9 people, an official report said on Tuesday.

The Police Ombudsman's report revealed that an Irish cardinal was involved in transferring Father James Chesney out of British-ruled Northern Ireland, highlighting again the role of the Church hierarchy in protecting priests against allegations of criminal activity.

Granted this was some time ago and the priest is long dead, never having to answer for his suspected crime. But once again, the collar gives one a pass to fondle children, embezzle, murder...

Correct me if I'm wrong...but wasn't there a lot of Christian on Christian violence in North Ireland around that time? If so, why cover up THIS instance?
That confuses me as well.

Really don't know. How much of that Christian on Christian violence was directly committed by priests? I always thought it was just Joe Citizens calling themselves Catholic or Protestant?
Ah, maybe I am missing the obvious. As long as it was just church-goers, and not the clergy, then it wasn't really the churches' faults.
According to Hutchinson (the Police Ombudsman), the reason they covered it up was because they thought at the time that public knowledge of the involvement of a priest would cause even more trouble.

So, if anyone ever asks you, "Is nothing sacred?"

Point to this story and say, "Yes, priests are. That's how this one got away with murder."
Word.
