Major Threat to Religion? Clergy People Coming Out as Atheists

Founded in March of 2011 with 52 members, the Clergy Project currently has over 270 members -- and since recent news stories about it began appearing, in outlets from MSNBC to NPR to the Religious News Service to CNN, applications to join have been going up at an even more dramatic rate.

Ruth, thanks for posting the article.  I thought is was interesting and well written.

There is nothing that brings weight to the issue of the specious nature of belief in a god or religion than a priest or minister or rabbi who comes out and says publicly, "this is a load of crap."

If the numbers of lapsed men (and women) of the cloth continue to increase and can be mobilized, it could be that they will constitute the most formidable opponent the believers have faced to date, and it could open the discussion and debate about religion in a way it has yet to be opened.

On 6-3-2012 on the "Atheist Experience" show a man by the name of Jerry DeWitt; who is one of the first to graduate from the Clergy Project.  Was on discussing the program.
