http://www.examiner.com "Atheists of Florida wrote a letter to Governor Charlie Crist yesterday demanding an apology for his abusive treatment of one of their members.
Crist, who is also a Republican candidate for the Florida Senate, was approached by Michael Middlebrooks on Friday, March 5, in St. Petersburg. Middlebrooks asked the Governor if it was true that he'd placed a letter "in Jerusalem to prevent hurricanes from hitting Florida," to which Crist replied, "Who's more powerful than God?"
When Middlebrooks told Crist he didn't believe in God, Crist allegedly ripped one of his own campaign stickers off Middlebrooks' chest and stalked away, shouting back, "I feel sorry for you!""
As tempting as it is to believe this story, the last part just seems fishy. Christ is an experienced politician and I doubt would have reacted so viscerally. He could have just kept walking and ignored the atheist, which is what so many politicians do, verses a confrontational approach where he loses his cool.
Well I have so far read this on several news forums, so at this point it looks like, for some reason, he just "lost his cool" with this atheist. It is amazing what ends up setting people off so I would not be surprised about anything.
Well this is all I have found so far, have to admit my skepticism is growing
Did Florida Governor Charlie Crist Have Run-In With an Atheist? http://www.opposingviews.com "Earlier this week, we reported on an incident that occurred in Florida between an atheist, Michael Middlebrooks, and Governor Charlie Crist, who is also a Senatorial candidate. (You can read that post here.)
Where is the media coverage beyond the atheist Web Pages? Some atheists have stated a skeptical view of this incident without proof. As Hemant Mehta says in his Friendly Atheist Blog, “But you mean to tell me Crist — a Republican candidate for Senate — attacked someone he was talking to while on the campaign trail and there were no cameras around?”"
The disturbing part of this story, for me, isn't that he lashed out at an atheist, it's that a senate candidate really thinks that posting a letter to Santa, sorry, posting a letter to God will act as some kind of hurricane prevention measure. It's just scary that this dude might have some actual power one day.
