Catholic bishops deny communion to Catholic democrat that supports abortion rights

Report: Kennedy barred from communion by bishop (link)

So, in a phrase: why should we care? Well, I think the hypocrisy is rich on this one. Why is it that the Catholic PAC will deny someone communion over support of abortion (which is the lack of state action to stop an action, for the record) but they will not boot congresspeople that support the death penalty (a state action to murder someone, for the record).

People will claim this is a religion throwing its weight around to effect specific politics, but rather a "spiritual matter," but that is horse sh*t. The Catholic PAC is specifically going out of its way to attack supporters of the health care reform bill over abortion...something the bill has nothing to do with. They don't go after Catholics for the death penalty, or Catholic congresspeople not trying to remove birth control from the health care bill like this, I wonder why not?

If you are willing to give people that support birth control, state murder, and pedophilia your magical crackers, then give it to people that support the right to choose, and quite trying to use people's religion as a weapon to change their politics!

What this is, beyond anything else, is the Catholic Church being publicly PETTY, in a vainglorious attempt to scare their less public parishioners into conforming to their standardized BS.

What would be curious from here is Kennedy's reaction. I would mightily doubt that he would leave the Catholic Church in protest; the tradition of Catholicism and the Kennedy family is a touch too thick to expect that, but if he maintains his pro-choice position and doesn't seek the sacrament which has for so long been a part of his life, he sends a message to others of his faith whose opinions are similarly canted.

So where from here? Does the Church finally dust off their ultimate weapon: excommunication, and if so, having used it, if its target maintains his stance, what happens to the credibility of the Church in the face of that defiance? This whole situation will bear some careful observation, not just in the immediate players, but in the spectators as well.
Agreed. I could care less who gets the magical crackers. But this kind of hypocrisy just irks the living shit out of me. It's like when such a fuss was made over Obama speaking at Notre Dame.

Really? The institution responsible for the Inquisition, the Crusades, untold child rapes and dehumanization of women, is going to bitch about the democratically elected president speaking at their college?

Actually when you phrase it like that it makes perfect sense.
It's like what the Catholic Church in Washington was saying a couple of weeks ago, "If you don't drop the attempt to legalize gay marriage, we're done supporting the homeless and sheltering the impoverished." It was something to that effect. I don't understand how politics polices the Churches ability to help others.
Hey! It's not like the Catholics are all bad. Why, in 2007, they decided not to send any more unbaptized dead babies into Limbo, didn't they? That's a good thing. Right?
Yep, they are on the barby now...so much better for us if you believe the rumors =P
Have you seen Chris Matthews scolding Bishop Tobin on Hardball yet? It'll do your soul good.
;)
I saw your post, but haven't found the time to watch the clip yet...
