A former bus driver has sued the Capital Area Rural Transportation System, charging that the nine-county transit service discriminated against him based on his religion when he was fired for refusing to drive a woman to a Planned Parenthood clinic in January.
Edwin Graning, who was hired as a driver on April 1, 2009, was “concerned that he might be transporting a client to undergo an abortion” when he was assigned to transport two women to Planned Parenthood, according to his lawsuit, filed this week in U.S. District Court in Austin.
Graning is seeking re-instatement, back pay and undisclosed damages for pain, suffering and emotion distress. He is represented by lawyers from the American Center for Law & Justice, founded by evangelical Christian leader Pat Robertson.
Yeah, of course it's religious discrimination to not let religious people bully others.
I never knew bus drivers were allowed to pick and choose who gets to go where. If he really wants to do that, he should start his own taxi business. Then he can refuse to drive people all he wants.
Can you imagine this ass arguing with the bus riders? What did he do, just not stop the bus and make them keep riding? Why would you not fire a bus driver who starts fights with his riders?
Of course this just shows his raw ignorance...if they were pregnant it was vastly more likely they were going to "typical" healthcare and not an abortion as that is most of what Planned Parenthood does. I mean, it is Planned PARENTHOOD not planned childlessness.
If you're going to be in the service business, get used to the fact that you will wind up serving people who don't like you and whom you don't like. Dealing with that is part of the job. I know - I've been in the service business (field service engineer) for 30 years.
If you are not prepared to face such realities, find yourself another line of work!!!
**Warning: Because I'm the genius that went on the following rant; FINISHED said rant and only then realised I hadn't finished reading the entire article, missing some seriously key points...** Mental attendance fail. I'm only posting this because if the story had happened my way, and all of my assumptions had been valid, I would have potentially made some good points, damn it! **/warning. ...Sorry.
What a completely ridiculous assery of a situation!!
I'd like to know how he determined that this woman was going to Planned Parenthood. And, if he's so high and mighty, did that Planned Parenthood even OFFER abortion services??
I mean, as far as I know, Planned Parenthood doesn't have its own bus stop. FFS, my old Planned Parenthood had a liquor store next to it. And apartments across the street. Around the corner was a bar and a ghetto neighborhood. The bus stop was at the opposite end of the block from the medical office.
My current Planned Parenthood is right next door to a restaurant called the Sunshine Pizza Exchange! (I've never been in. So don't ask. I'm a little scared, to be honest.) - I don't even KNOW where a bus stop is around that place. And it's in a pretty big Fred Meyer shopping center, which is a BIG retailer up here in the Pacific Northwest.
So my long winded point is, this woman could have simply been getting off at a bus stop near the planned parenthood. - Did he ask her where she was going, specifically? If so, that seems like a lot of horse shit. Did she just get on the bus and blurt out, "Take me to Planned Parenthood so I can assimilate this bastard zygote!" If so, what a moron. -
He should be a private cheauffeur for religious anti-choicers if he is unable to perform his duties as a public service employee.
Or, he could he at least be consistent? How often does he provide rides to liquor stores; enabling alcoholism? Or what about how many times he's facilitated rides to passengers who were maybe on their way home to beat their spouse or abuse their children?
For all this genius knew, she could have been going to planned parenthood seeking a pregnancy test, maybe even WANTING to keep it. Maybe she doesn't have a job that offers insurance and needed a well known, safe, professional, no-insurance-friendly place to seek medical assistance.
What does this woman have to say about all of this? Other than, "god damn it, I really need my own car."
Heh, yeah, we'll just have to stick with the basic issue that he didn't even know for sure why they were going to the Family Planning clinic ... and that it wouldn't matter even if he knew for a fact that they were getting an abortion.
You're a freaking driver. You drive people where they want to go. You don't get involved with why they're going there, as long as it isn't something illegal.
Can't someone just give me permission to beat the sh!t out of this guy? What a bigoted moron. It outrages me how these religious punks can abuse women who are already distressed.
I don't see the religious discrimination here. He agreed to do the job, which presumably includes an agreement that he doesn't get to pick and choose his passengers.
If other drivers get to pick and choose based on their religious beliefs, but he doesn't, then he has a case. Just like if one religious group gets to wear their symbol-necklace, but another doesn't.
I think this guy (like many a Xian) simply doesn't get what constitutes discrimination.
Bullshit! If you drive a bus, you have to follow a route. It's too fucking bad people are getting off where you don't like. Do your fucking job or quit.
God fucking damn it. What the fuck?
I'm so fucking flustered by this shit. Pharmacists doing this was bad enough. Then we had grocery store clerks unwilling to sell condoms. Now this. I mean fuck. Why?
