Terminally-ill patients would be well advised to find out the religious beliefs of their doctor, according to research showing the effect of faith on a doctor's willingness to make decisions that could hasten death.

Doctors who are atheist or agnostic are twice as likely to take decisions that might shorten the life of somebody who is terminally ill as doctors who are deeply religious – and doctors with strong religious convictions are less likely even to discuss such decisions with the patient, according to Professor Clive Seale, from the centre for health sciences at Barts and the London school of medicine and dentistry.

Wow, way to take a story about end-of-life care and spin it as hard as one possibly can in favor of the religious. Wonder if they took a cue from the pull-the-plug-on-grandma/death-panels crowd here in the States?

Nah, that's schizophrenics. Obsessive-compulsives just pull out the hand-wipes every time they shake hands with someone.
Ah, yeah, I used to know a guy like that. He gave up and wore gloves all the time. Good thing, really. He had sausage fingers, creeped all the women out.
Sausage fingers?

And I'm not that bad, but shaking hands does give me the willies, and I have to go wash them before I handle anything that belongs to me.

Do you have any idea how many people don't even wash their hands after they use the bathroom? My reaction isn't as bad with women, since their numbers are much better. I can tell myself, "Yeah, she looks pretty neat and takes care of herself," and I'll get over it. With guys, not so much.
What is their target range, anyway? Don't they stop in the mid-30's or there about?
Wow, the Army is loose. Of course I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 11 or 12 and OCD at 16 or 17, so I was never at risk. Still, good to know.
As to the difference in healthcare systems, Michael Moore's Sicko film pretty much nails it. I dunno if you've seen it, but it's partly informative and partly - to use a term I had to coin in order to describe the rage - utterly fistblazing.
Yeah, I keep meaning to watch some of his stuff. I've just been too busy lately to keep track of all of the stuff I want to do.
After seeing what my parents, friends, friends' parents, relatives, have gone through, I am strongly in favor of voluntary euthanasia when the alternative is endless suffering. I mean, we do that for our pets, so why not?

When it became obvious that I needed to get a MedicAlert bracelet "just in case," I had them engrave "DNR" on the very top line, before all the other boring details. It took some doing, my doctor and I had to sign a form stating unequivocally that this is what I want, because I do not ever want to end up like Christopher Reeve.

My doctor agrees with me wholeheartedly.
No one's personal beliefs should have anything to do with doing their job right. You're spot-on.
Yeah, unfortunately, this is America we're talking about. We've still got court cases going on over whether we should be teaching Evolution or Creationism in school, and we've still got doctors in Catholic hospitals denying rape victims the morning-after-pill ... or at least we did a few years ago. I don't know if that sort of thing is still going on.
So religious doctors are more likely to lie to you. thank goodness I have an advanced directive.
The ice floes are shrinking/vanishing.
