For the first time, Malaysian authorities have caned three Muslim women
under Islamic law for acts of adultery, the Malaysian national news
agency Bernama said.

Home Minister Hishamuddin Hussein announced the canings Wednesday, saying the penalty was carried out February 9 at a women's prison near
Kuala Lumpur.

"It is hoped that the issue will not be wrongly interpreted to the extent of tarnishing the sanctity of Islam," he was quoted as saying.

It's funny, but I don't think I've ever heard a word about Muslim men being punished for adultery. I guess it's only a crime if you're a woman.

Does this belong in the new POE group?
Without doubt. Bet you a cuppa coffee, the spokesman said it with a straight face, utterly serious, more concerned with conforming to the strictures of his faith than the point of view of anyone outside his faith.

In other words, we want our cake and to eat it too.
Oh, I'm sure the men got a big slap on the hand and a "you naughty boy, you"!
Or a big slap on the back and a "Dude! Score!"
And this is coming from a so-called moderate Muslim country. This is why I don't trust "moderate" Islam either; it can be anything.

By the way anyone who wants to say "but the West does blah blah blah and who are we to think we know what's best for everyone"...tell that to the women who just got caned, I'm sure they'll understand and appreciate your open-mindedness toward their culture.
Truly scary and sad...

I actually lived in Malaysia for a year, and after having heard about the undercover Islamic police, I decided to wear a bindi and/or dress Indian-style so as not to be mistaken for a Muslim and get into trouble for drinking alcohol, not observing Ramadan and holding hands with my very blonde then German boyfriend. (Oh, those were good times anyway!!)

Don't worry. It won't. The sanctity of Islam has a far, far worse reputation than this.
