I watched a thing on Think Big about why skeptics/atheists/science-purveyors/secular-humanists, us, shouldn't be dicks.
Being a dick does nothing to help a person to open their minds and think reasonably....
Then Richard Dawkins came along and pointed out that the point of occasionally being a dick and debating knowing full well that the other guy wont listen to reason is for the benefit of the audience; the third party. Good arguments delivered with vicious wit is like aiding medicine with honey. The people not actively engaged in the debate themselves don't have their reputation on the line and so being a dick does not harm to our intent on helping them think.
Only if you're talking one on one with a believer should you be really nice and respectful and understanding, otherwise there's no real benefit.

- Well, I mean, I take a more relaxed approach, myself. I just have no problem with Atheists who go all out on theists and mock them at ever turn. Certainly, in a one on one situation, if you're actually trying to win someone over and get them to use reason, then a more mannered approach is best.
