I recently wrote song about people who avoid the truth. One of the verses is my atheism coming out:

She knelt and prayed at Jesus' feet

She said, "Life is hard, but Heaven's sweet"

And, all the loved ones I will meet

Please say we all live one

Jesus waved his arm

And said, "Up there's only sky.

Now, get on your feet and be a big girl. Goodbye.'

Chorus:

And the answers she was lookin for were swarming all around

So she looked down and pretended she didn't see.

This is a great idea. All I can say is "more, more and more."  For millennia, believers have reinforced their message with music. It's time for atheists to make a joyful noise.  Maybe someday a "Humanist Song Book."  Music is very powerful - even atheists felt emotionally affected when, as an experiment, they held hands and sang "Amazing Grace."  Imagine 500 atheists singing beautiful songs about the powers of the human mind and the wonders of nature and science.

Hear hear!!

Jerry Phillips' Humanist Hymnal, a collection of reclaimed Christian hymns and (Christmas/Yule) carols, is back online!

(And we now have some stirring new humanistic words to the Hallelujah Chorus!)

Your lyrics remind me of the experience of the Rev. James Huber -- "mystic atheist" and author of Kissing Hank's Ass -- where God appeared to him in a vision and said, among other things, that God didn't exist.

Many thanks, Cat!

From, "Shut the Fuck Up"

The preacher looked down his long nose and said, "Son, Jesus Loves you.

He's up there in Heaven smiling and thinking of you.

But you better get down on your knees.'Put somethin in the collection plate please

Or you'll burn in Hell while Jesus is miles above you."

And I said, "Why don't you shut the fuck up? You're makin me sad.

Why does it make you feel good to make me feel bad?

All I want is my Harley to ride

Play my guitar, get laid, and get high.

Why don't you shut the fuck up? You're makin me sad."
