Comedienne Lisa Lampanelli donates $50,000 to gay charity in Westboro Baptist Church's name

It turns out good things can come from one of the most bigoted organizations in America - albeit indirectly.

When comedienne Lisa Lampanelli, 49, learned that the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church planned to protest her Topeka, Kan., show, she vowed to donate a $1,000 to the Gay Men's Health Crisis organization for each protester who showed up.

And, after more than 44 Westboro members, who happen to be headquartered in Topeka, crashed her performance Friday, Lampanelli followed through.

She also went above and beyond her initial pledge. When there was a discrepancy as to just how many protestors were there, Lampanelli decided to up her donation.

I understand that the Westboro Baptist Church is going to the Reason Rally.

Here are some suggestions on how to respond to them.

I think the guy you are talking about was in another country which gave him the sentence more symbolic than anything else. They also have a law that says you can't serve more than a 50 year sentence. Older guy so either way he's there for life. I think here you get life without the possibility of parole is the only real life sentence.

A life sentence isn't really life, if you're young.  I think most states define it as 40 years or so.  If someone is in their 20's, when they commit a murder, they'll sometimes be eligible for parole by the age of 40.

In some cases, that can be a good thing.  I think it's possible to rehabilitate some people.  In other cases ... not so much.

Yeah, even with time off for good behavior and early parole, you're still pretty much done.  Slapping on a number that high is also usually a result of many, many counts of a crime that's worth 15 or 20 years a piece.  Each individual crime isn't worth a life sentence, but the repeated commission of them is worth it.

A "Life" sentence carries a parole eligibility in most states. All it means is they can keep you for life if they want to but they can also let you go. Of course 6,060 years is over-kill but it guarantees you'll be there 'til you die.

I recently read an article about a man that committed an extremely unthinkable crime and was sentenced to 6,060 years in prison.  What happened to simply sentencing to life?
