@ Sandi: Have you noticed how expensive "soul food" has become? Especially ribs?
I love making things like Split Pea and/or 16-Bean Soup, and a vital ingredient in both is ham hocks...I can rarely find them in the stores anymore, and when I do, they're not cheap. These are parts that white folks used to throw away because they considered them too low-class to eat. I iz a white folk, and I love that stuff! (Though you would have to strap me to a gurney and sedate me to get me to eat escargot....or squid, aka "calamari." Ew.)

Same deal with bacon. It used to be a throw away part and now it's considered one of the best tasting foods. I think that's why the Hebrews were forbidden to eat it. This food of the gods was too good for mere mortals.

Hi folks. I haven't been active here for a year or so. Thought I'd make up for it with a little ditty I was inspired to compose this morning. I'm sure most of you are old enough to know the theme song for the 'Beverly Hillbillies' TV series.

@ sk8eycat: I have noticed that some of the meat where I buy from has doubled in price in the last year. It seems you have to 'sell your soul' in order to eat. I guess atheists will just starve!
I can't say that I like a lot of soul food, I think this is an acquired taste!

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.
