Just recently, the US backed Egypt on an new UN Blasphemy Laws. At the top level, my knee jerk reaction was WTF and that is a huge blow to free speech. Looking at it from another side, will this new law actually prohibit the bible and other holy books that has passages that criticize other religions and even directly instructing the followers to 'stone' nonbelievers or followers of other gods?
I think that law is grossly inappropriate, no matter what its affects. The fact is, instructions to stone nonbelievers shouldn't be outlawed because they're intolerant of religious differences, they should be outlawed because they're instructions to stone people. Neither you nor I nor the UN should give a flying fuck why they want to stone anyone, as long as that barbaric practice is ended forever.
I also have to agree that the reason is basically irrelevant since it justifies murder. It would be nice that if it did get through that there would be some silver lining but there won't be. You are trying to think rationally about an irrational situation. The people who back these types of laws have always justified and excused away anything that could be used against them. The law will only apply when they choose to apply it. You can be sure they can not be found guilty of "blasphemy" and nothing, Bible or Quran, can be labeled "blasphemous" unless they are the ones making the decision. Just ice to them is simply what they say it is.

In practice? No.
It will be used to justify cracking down on religious criticism.
Since the blasphemy law has been passed, I am very interested in how this will play out. My being inside the US, I am wondering how, and if this law will be used to influence changes or views of us nonbeliever groups.
Excellent response. This kind of response is exactly the kind of thing I strive for and often fall short of, its always tempting to do the emotional thing and not react with the effort it takes to really think before we speak. Thanks for reminding us of the correct way to respond to an issue.
