Christian blogger wants to know why atheists bother to speak out against religion: http://maaadddog.wordpress.com/2009/11/28/methinks-atheists-doth-protest-too-much/

I left my answer. Maybe others would care to chime in?

A law against blasphemy is certainly a threat to both free speech and reason. I'm not interested in seeing another Dark Ages.

The Blasphemy Law doesn't surprise me. Look at the way they treated the victims after the "Inquiry". Quite shameless. And they're offering a pittance in compensation. They should refuse the compensation and sue the sorry asses off the Vatican.

It also wouldn't surprise me if this wasn't just one influence peddling attempt by the Vatican to muzzle the victims.

Is anyone else here suspicious that this 'blasphemous libal' law has been enforced only weeks after the Ryan Report and its terrible findings of Catholic abuse of children in their care? Is it just me who finds this highly suspicious? Would there be any change that Ahern was under pressure from the Vatican to find ways of gagging anti-catholic, or just plain religious, criticism?

I don't know, but I smell a rat and it comes from Rome.

@Mr Black: Well, good on them! I know the good guys won't go down without a good (and properly mocking, lol) fight, but this is still just a ridiculous situation.

@ zack: the folks at Marshmallow Ladyboy Jesus are on the job: working out of Ireland, they intend to intentionally blaspheme across the spread of society and its beliefs, putting the ball back in the government's court, and they may just incidentally be rather funny. This one is a classic!

@zack: What the fuck! That is the most ass-backward and terrifying thing I've heard in ages.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermot_Ahern

Ahern was appointed Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform on the 7 May 2008 by the new Taoiseach Brian Cowen
On the 29th of April 2009, Ahern proposed an amendment to the Defamation Bill adding the crime of blasphemy to the statute books.[2] This law passed on the 9th of July 2009.

NO!!!!!!!!! HOW THE FUCK DID THIS HAPPEN?

"Free-thinker" was a popular term in the 19th century amongst atheists and I see no reason why it shouldn't be re-activated. It captures the Enlightenment ideals of thinking and investigation without fear or prejudice. For the British amongst us Cha…

I think this ignores one simple and demonstrable fact: Beginning with the 17th century enlightenment, there has been a gradual movement away from religious faith. An increase in knowledge about nature has offered a competing theory about life's orig…

This group will do more than just pick apart biblical errors and contradictions. Let's closely examine the Bible and Qur'an. Nothing is sacred; every prophecy, proverb, and parable deserves examination and critique.

Hi everyone,I grew up in a Christian home, and for 30 years I was quite dedicated to it. A couple of years ago, I think it was in 2004 or 2005, I lost all faith in the religion. So here I am. Atheist since 5 years, and I can see any reason why ever…
