Hi, Steph, I've seen them all this summer, even the latest Transformers and the Green Hornet as well as Green Lantern, all of which were ok but didn't really impress me.  Far more to my liking were the Marvel flicks:  Thor; X-Men: First Class; and, last but certainly not least, Captain America, which I thought was the best of the lot.  Hope the Avengers movie next year lives up to good expectations.

During the first decade of Marvel Comics, the version of the Norse & Greek/Roman gods could be regarded more as beings from some sort of parallel universe, akin to Dormammu and the other dimensional characters Dr. Strange routinely encountered, who had close connections with Earth and were regarded as gods due to their vast powers. Perhaps even Mephisto, introduced in 1968, could be regarded as such a creature rather than the Judeo-Christian devil. Then, in the early '70s, came the Ghost Rider and the Son of Satan, both explicitly connected to the devil. Meanwhile, DC from early on in the '40s had the Spectre, created by God (as channeled through Siegel & Schuster), and then Alan Moore & Neil Gaiman introducing more demons and angels in their stories.
Ultimately, though, whether presented as super-heroes or villains, gods, demons or whatever, it's all make-believe conjured up for entertainment. Few if anyone believes in the old gods anymore, but many of them live on in the comics, just as the purportedly mortal heroes and villains will nevertheless routinely cheat death and live forever as long as they have an audience to cheer or hate them.
Maybe the closest you'll get to a comics universes without gods or their equivalents may be such fare as the Archies or Love & Rockets.
