Seriously though, this reminds me of the ghoul effect in Jacob's Ladder which scared me silly at the time.

A very early Sixth Sense in some regards but far more scary.
The spirits in Ladder did/do something similar with their heads - if you can call them heads. It's a great film with a powerful message, IMO.
