Awww, that's a sweet story Felaine!  I know not all dogs are like that.  Better to keep toddlers away from strange dogs though.

Mindy, I have to say that not ALL dogs are like that; SuperDog was old and had the worst case of hip dysplasia I've ever seen, and the toddler was about the same height he was.  Eye to eye...he didn't charge the fence, or anything, but I'd never seen him raise his hackles at anything before.  Except other dogs.  He was extremely territorial.

However, he was absolutely sweet to me from the first time I met him, and once when I was staying with them (there were three big dogs in the family...one purebred German shepherd and two shepherd mixes), I was having a terribly painful root canal; the kind where it took at least 3 treatments to get the crud out, and seal it up.  I had come back from the dentist, and the anesthesia was wearing off; I was lying on the bed with my face in the pillow, crying.  Supe trundled in, "kissed" my ear, and trundled out as fast as he could.  If he didn't have fur on his face, I think he would have been blushing.

He was NOT a "kissy" dog.  He was very "talky," though.

I did not know that either about dogs not recognizing little ones as human.  Good to know.

I had no idea some dogs didn't recognize toddlers as humans. Thanks for all the stories.

Cats can be very courageous. Years ago, in another apartment one of my cats called me to the garden and when I opened the back door there were two big dogs digging in my garden. Plinius (yes, I use his name) made sure I kept watching and he chased the dogs away.

What an amazing cat.

Years ago, our big malemute/husky wasn't particularly used to small kids, although he did see them around the neighborhood. When my daughter still lived here & visited with her kids, our dog ''adopted'' the youngest kid, (about 2) as ''his'' & nobody but nobody was going to get near her! My husband had to finally drag him away from her so she could get back in the house. He wasn't doing anything, but none of us could even come close to touching that kid!
