Not to speak for anyone else in the group, Don, but I didn't misunderstand the message of James' post... I didn't understand the point of posting it in a group specifically for people who love cats.

I hadn't made any rules about what people can and can't post here, but I will as soon as I have time.. I'm going to leave what has been written, and would ask group moderators to leave it. This is not the first time someone lectured the group about what they should or shouldn't spend their money on. I'm not interested in it happening again.

The arrogance of assumption irritates me no end. This is a group for people who love cats. What else people do or don't love is up to them, but I won't have people who came here specifically because they are non-theist cat lovers, lectured.

I don't appreciate it when people preach about what I (or anyone else) should or shouldn't be spending money on. Assume much?

In a nutshell, I had been an activist since my early 20s. I spent a higher percentage of my income than your average American on all sorts of charitable and political issues. One of the reasons I don't have much saved for my older age is because of there always being someone, somewhere in the world in greater economic distress than me.

More later.

James, maybe I'm suffering sleep deprivation and not fully functioning, but would you please clarify what the point of your post is?

Congrats Prog Rock Girl, just by being an infidel, you've pissed off a whole shit-load of 'em. Hope they like polish sandwiches.

James: I'm all for pissing off Muslims.

An email I sent to a friend in Dallas. He and his wife spend a fortune on cats, e.g. catching them and paying for neutering whether they take the cat in or let it go:

"The money you spend on cats and other animals would feed a small town in Africa, Asia, or elsewhere. Given the standard of living in places like Pakistan, no wonder the terrorist groups are able to recruit, as was so aptly illustrated in the best movie so far about the Mideastern Problem: "Syriana." Episodic, the film starts with Muslim workers in Yemen whose contracts have come to an end and they find themselves penniless and stuck in a foreign country. They drift into jihadist circles and are fairly easily recruited into the terrorist group. Eventually we see them boat-bombing a ship just as happened in Yemen with the USS Cole. The movie shows how the CIA quickly forgets they ever knew you once they've used you for various purposes. A companion film that is pretty good, too, also about the CIA and the Mideast (indirectly), one directed by Robert De Niro (b. 1943) is "The Good Shepherd." The problem is, these people see Hollywood movies and images of American life on TV ("Dallas" caused entire towns in many countries to simply shut down for the hour) and wonder one of two things: (1) why can't I have those things myself? and (2) what would Allah say about such sinful behavior, from allowing women in the workplace to adulation of a sex addict like Tiger Woods. Almost all that we do is offensive to Muslims as counter to sha'ria law. I suspect there are plenty of people in various parts of the world who would love a little plastic tub of Fancy Feast. And they are angry that we give it to cats."

Dave has always admired Harlan and has often tried to be as glib--but he's too nice a guy to completely pull it off. (And Harlan, when he's not being "on stage", can also be pretty decent. Unfortunately, he gets trapped in that public persona too often.)

He outdid himself eventually: some critics think "Touch of Evil" is easily as fine as "Kane." I did go to a website devoted to "Tribbles" and from what I read, I may have had "attitude" when I met the author. I think I was expecting him to be as big an ass as Harlan Ellison.

When your first professional sale is something as brilliant as Tribbles, it's hard to keep pace. Sort of like Orson Welles doing Citizen Kane as a young man and then spending the rest of his long life trying to measure up to it again.

Mr. Gerrold wouldn't remember me. He was a guest at the late Dr. Donald A. Reed's Count Dracula Society. We had lots of famous guests, Bradbury once, others. Forrest Ackerman. Lively bunch.

@Stephen: Just asking is all.
