@ Thanks, yes. Mr. Thom arrived around 9AM, washed the dust, cat hair, etc out of the filter, made some adjustments, et voila!  Cool air!

He's coming back Monday to do a complete check-up.  Both cats have perked up, but Jerry still doesn't seem to be drinking enough.  I'm feeding them canned food with a lot of gravy in it, just in case...  Now I need to catch up on 2 nights worth of sleep. My mattress soaked up so much heat during those 2 days that it didn't cool off atnight,  Felt like a just-used ironing board.

How in the world did we llive without A/C?  I was in my mid 20s before Dad bought a system for this house, and I remember when I was 6 to 8 or 9 and we had a lot of fruit trees in the yard.  Mother spent the summers canning peaches, figs, strawberries.  This same house...how did she stand it?

My eyes are falling out, and my fingers aren't cooperating at all. G'nite, y'all!

Sk8eycat -- did you get your AC working ok?  I used to have a fountain for my kitty, but he didn't like it.  He only liked to drink out of the water facet when it was running.  He lived to be 19 years old.  I have yet to get another cat.  Soon I hope.

O, fangkew!  I couldn't sleep last night, so I sat here and read hundreds (felt like) of Customer Reviews on just about every fountain listed on the net...mostly on Amazon.  Actually, I read the one-star comments...almost every brand had at least 4 or 5 people complaining that the pump motors gave out after 6 or 7 weeks, and were impossible to replace.  The ones that collected algae were all plastic, so I started looking at stainless (found out cats didin't like them...were afraid of them. Maybe they saw their own reflections...), and ceramic.  Found ONE ceramic fountain made in the USA (everything else was made in China with who-knows-what in the glaze).  So, I think I'm going to blow $100.00 on the Glacier Point Basic, made in the USA... their customers had high praise for their personal service when something did go wrong.

Now...I didn't feel like a criminal for putting Noisy down; I hated myself for prolonging the agony.  She stopped wanting to eat 2 or 3 weeks before I could finally bring myself to let her go.  Badddd!

I also went through a similar thing with both my parents.  My dad had discussed things with his doctor, and after he had a bad stroke, the doc gave orders to make him comfortable.  Period.  Mother didn't need life support or anything like that, her body just slowly shut down, so the last 2 weeks were sad.  She wasn't in pain, but sometimes she thought she was in jail.

For myself...I'm violently allergic to morphine, and diabetic, so I bought a MedicAlert bracelet, and the very first line says "DNR"  If I stop breathing for any reason, that's IT!  I don't want some amateur trying CPR on me, or any other "heroic" measures.  If the brain is oxygen-deprived for more than 4 minutes, the cells start to die, and I can think of a lot of worse things than death.

Whoo-hoo.  What a grim conversation.

After I have some sleep, I think I'm going to call the Glacier Point people, ask a few questions, and probably go ahead and order the Basic fountain for Jerry.  I don't always know when he wants me to turn on a tap for him.  Then all I have to do is figure out where to plug it in....

Thanks for everything! And happy Friday.  (WE are in for a doozy...the A/C quit yesterday, and I can't get a repairman till late tonight.  And he'll prob'ly talk religion at me...but he's a neighbor, and we've known him for 40 or 50 years, and he's the best heating & air man in town.  I just smile and shake my head, and we part friends.)

sk8eycat, I will be honest. I used a fountain years ago, and found that it collected algae very fast, and it was impossible to really scrub out the inner workings, and the filter wasn't very effective. Maybe they have gotten better over the years, I don't know.

I am currently doing subQ fluids every day with a cat in kidney failure. And I agree, it's like torture to her, and breaks my heart, so I am trying to make the decision on whether to put her down. Part of me says that since she's still eating, and appears to be comfortable except when she's getting fluid, to let her live, but part of me says that putting her through that is too much. I DO believe in euthanasia for people and animals who are suffering excruciating, unrelievable pain, and who are going to die anyway -- I don't believe in merely prolonging death, but she seems to be having quality of life for 23 3/4 out of 24 hours. So I do think it's a dilemma, but I DON'T think you were a criminal for doing it. It hurts to lose a beloved one, even if it's an animal, but the most important consideration is the animal's welfare. Whenever I have lost a cat, I have cried, which I think is normal, and I MISS them, but I hope I never did anything that was bad for them. And parenthetically, when my mother was dying, and I refused any life-support, like intubation and tube feeding, it was because I knew how miserable SHE was, and I knew she wanted to die, and I was more concerned with relieving her pain than my desire to keep her. The body in the bed wasn't my mother, anyway. I miss her terribly, but it's the healthy, vibrant person I miss, not the dying body in the bed.

I've had a Drinkwell fountain for a while, and the three cats we have here all LOVE it.  Indeed, I think all three prefer to drink from the flow rather than from the bowl itself.

The one downside of the fountain is that they DO require maintenance, and yes, that does require full disassembly, which is not that difficult.  It takes typically about 15 minutes for a quick scrub, sometimes with a bottle brush in places.  The filters are also a bit of a pain, but their lifetime is considerably longer than the manufacturer would have you believe (typical).

Are they perfect?  Not hardly, but they do work, our cats use it, and I think it's worth the effort.

I posted this in the "Health" page yesterday, but I think I need to Copy & Paste it here, too. It's turning into a serious situation, Jerry will only drink from the tap now, and I have to do something about it ASAP:

Does anybody have any experience with CAT DRINKING FOUNTAINS?  Mr Jerry only wants to drink out of a slow tap, and I want to try a fountain since he's 13 years old and needs a lot of water to keep his kidneys healthy.  I lost one sweet kitty to kidney failure a few years ago; we kept her semi-healthy and happy for almost a year by giving her subcutaneous fluids every other day, but I don't ever want to have to do that again!  It was very stressful for both of us, and I felt like a criminal when she finally had to be euthanized.

I've been researching customer reviews of products on Amazon, and there seem to be a lot of people who are delighted with various DRINKWELL fountains at first, but become disenchanted with them after a few weeks or months...they break down, or are difficult/impossible to keep clean, etc.  And there are similar complaints about other brands.

I'm still researching, but if anybody here has any recommendations, complaints, any info at all, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks!

I think your LOLs are wonderful -- not lame Sk8eycat.  I've been looking at your page. Yes, I also like the Egrets LOL.  Nice stories behind the pictures too.

Confession: I stole the "Egrets" pun from a Sandra Boynton greeting card I saw (and bought...after I stopped lauging like a maniac) about 30+ years ago!
