Y'all know that I do some typing and proofing, etc. for a local monthly paper called The Pet Press...I got permission from the publisher/editor, Lori Golden, to post this month's editorial in here...Good News For Animals 2011:

From The Editor

New Hope for a New Year

According to Care2 Causes, in 2011 organized campaigns and legal action brought about many victories for animals. The following is a list of just some of these highlights:

Bolivia became the first South America country to ban the use of wild animals in circuses. Thanks to a campaign by Animal Defenders International all of the animals were relocated to wildlife sanctuaries.

Shark fin products were banned in California and Toronto.

Japan’s annual illegal whale hunt was shortened due to pressure from activists.

Suffolk County, New York created the nation’s first animal abuse registry.

Cooney’s Law in Nevada upgraded animal abuse to a felony crime.

Iam’s Home 4 The Holidays campaign which works with 3,500 animal rescue groups worldwide, adopted its 6 millionth dog.

Israel placed a country wide ban on declawing cats

Spain banned bullfighting in its north-eastern region.

Maine was the sixth state to pass legislation banning the use of gestation crates and veal crates for animals on factory farms.

The National Institute of Health suspended funding for any new experiments on chimpanzees.

Alabama unanimously passed a ban on using gas chambers for euthanasia.

California signed a law to strengthen the penalties for cock fighting and dog fighting and those who attend events.

Russia banned importing harp seal products

BLM promised to make changes on how wild horses are rounded up.

The Humane Society of the United States reported 1,615 pet stores joined its campaign to stop selling puppy mill dogs in favor of adopting homeless pets.

Toronto banned the sale of pupy mill dogs in pet shops throughout the city.

These last two victories are having a major influence here in Los Angeles, as evidenced by the notes from the LA Animal Commission Meeting from January 10, 2012.

On June 8, 2011, the Los Angeles City Council approved a motion by Councilmember Paul Koretz (seconded by Councilmember Tony Cardenas) instructing Los Angeles Animal Services (“LAAS”) to study and make recommendations on the following issues:

1. The establishment of a ban on the sale of commercial mill-bred dogs, cats, chickens and rabbits within the city limits.

2. The creation of a program whereby LAAS can work with licensed pet stores to make shelter animals available for adoption at those stores on a regular or periodic basis.

3. The creation of a program whereby LAAS, as a part of its normal pet store licensing procedures, publicly and visibly identifies stores that excel in meeting rigorous humane requirements and conditions in the kenneling and sale of live animals consistent with all City, state and federal laws, or which do not sell live animals.

4. The prohibition of the establishment and/or operation of puppy, kitten, chicken and rabbit mills within the City of Los Angeles.

A handful of pet shops in Southern California have voluntarily moved to an alternative business model relative to obtaining animals to sell. Instead of working through commercial brokers, they obtain the dogs and cats from local animal shelters, or play host to mobile adoption operations sponsored by animal agencies or rescue groups. (See page 17 for an update on two such stores – Shelter Hope Pet Shop in Thousand Oaks and L.A. Love & Leashes in the Westside Pavilion Mall.)

These retailers have found that, when they remain in the pet retailing field, their acquisition costs for the animals are lower (often significantly so), while sales remain both relatively constant and thus, profitable. Hosting mobile adoptions requires careful vetting of the operators but, when done properly, it also can prove to be an effective way to attract customers.

This is definitely a positive sign for Los Angeles and the thousands of animals waiting to be rescued into loving, forever homes.

If you happen to live in greater Los Angeles, look for The Pet Press at pet supply stores (You have to ask for it at PetCo; they refuse to display it), vet offices, coffee shops, doggie day care centers, Cat and Dog boarding facilities...or contact Lori to find out if there's some place near you that carries the paper.  It's FREE!  (Subscriptions anywhere in the US are $25 a year.)

End of plug.

NOTICE: I'm going to be away from the computer next week...the 7th through the 11th, probably.  I'll be cat-sitting for a friend, and I promise to take some pictures.  Duncan is the Fred Astaire of cats...all he needs is the top hat and the stylish walking stick. (I need my walking stick just to stand up straight! Getting old sux.)
