Comment by sk8eycat on August 4, 2011 at 8:16pm @ Steph S My congratulations and admiration for the people of Austin! There are several groups here in SoCal who picket stores that sell puppies and kittens from mills. One pet shop decided to feature only animals from legitimate rescue groups, and another was shut down. Los Angeles is so large, and the politics are so complicated, that I don't think they will ever pass a law prohibiting the sale of mass-bred pets...at least not in my lifetime.
The group I admire the most is D Cups Saving Tea Cups...
http://www.dcupssavingteacups.com/DCupsSavingTeaCups/The_Real_Women...
they started up when all the air-head "celebrities" began buying those tiny dogs they could carry around in their purses.
I grit my teet when I see Sphinx cats and "Munchkins"...those short-legged kitties. I feel so sorry for them; they have major health and care problems, and I think the people who breed them for commercial purposes ought to be taken out and shot. Or confined to cages and forced to have baby after baby till their uteri fall out.
But I have a nasty mind.
Seriously....the only way to shut down kitten and puppy mills is to dry up the demand. And that's the most difficult thing of all.
Comment by annet on August 4, 2011 at 1:21am After two years of weekly protests, the Petland store in Austin closed its doors in July 2010. In December 2010, the Austin City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of puppies and kittens in stores.
There is a group in Austin called Protest Petland -- they were successful in getting the store closed. They are now protesting the Georgetown, TX Petland store.

Comment by sk8eycat on August 3, 2011 at 7:15am Some pet stores do let rescue groups bring dogs, cats, rabbits in for adoptions. (Kittens and puppies, too.) You just have to check them out first. Stores advertising AKC registered puppies, are selling ones bred in puppy mills under horrible conditions...and there are kitten mills, too.
I do some volunteer work for a little local newspaper that is dedicated to closing down disreputable breeders, hoarders, stores that sell puppy mill offspring, and trying to make Los Angeles a "No Kill" city. It's kinda difficult when so many people are too stupid to spay/neuter their pets. (Or "gangsta" boys think it's macho to have an intact pit bull.)
"If your pet won't wear a condom...get him fixed!"
Comment by Prog Rock Girl on August 2, 2011 at 7:21pm Rescuing is also good...all my cats were abandoned by someone else. Actually I haven't gotten a kitten in years b/c there are so many adult cats in need of a home.
