Gag me with a spoon!  This is the kind of thing I'm typing this month:

Oct 2 - Blessing of the Animals ~ 10AM

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Courtyard, 14646 Sherman Way, Van Nuys

Parishioners, community members, and their pets are invited to the celebration of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. Holy Eucharist will follow the blessing. Refreshments will be served after the service. Plenty of parking space. For more info, call 818-785-4251

Oct 8 – St. Francis Fest - Blessing of the Animals ~ 11AM - 3PM

Trinity Lutheran Church & School, 4783 W. 130th St.& Inglewood Ave., Hawthorne.  Pet Blessing, Exhibits & Booths, Food & Refreshments, Pet Boutique, Face Painting, Games, Crafts, Contests & Prizes. Pets should be on a leash or in a carrier; if your pet doesn’t travel well, you may bring a picture. For more info, call 310-675-4493

"...you may bring a picture"???!!?  Doesn't that sound sort of like spiritualism...where a person hands something belonging to the one they want to know about to a medium for a "reading"?  Spooky.  Of course some of the pet fairs around here also feature "animal communicators;" people who claim they can tell what their pets are thinking by touching them, OR touching something like a collar or a photo.

Anyroad, I always have to laugh when I see communion and refreshments mentioned in the same sentence.

That news about peta is awful.  Where did you hear about these infractions?  I have donated to them in the past so I'd like to read more.  Thanks!

AnneT, it's because, although their name is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, they are anything but. They do things like taking animals and saying they are bringing them to a shelter, and then just killing them. They "liberate" lab animals into the streets to die a painful and agonizing death by starvation, being prey for dogs and cats, run over by cars, etc. And this is just what I know on the surface -- who knows what other despicable acts they are committing!

Too extreme, IMO.

Natalie (or others) why don't you like peta?

Thank you for your hard work, sk8eycat! My heart breaks for all the abandoned animals in shelters, knowing that I can't possibly rescue more than what I already have. I give money if I can be sure the charity is not a PETA front, or some other scam.

The Rainbow Bridge is a very pretty fairy-tale -- and if it gives some people emotional comfort, I'm not opposed to it. The fact that most people aren't intellectually or emotionally sophisticated enough to be able to tell truth from fairy tale is an unfortunate thing, but it's reality. :-(

I kinda hate the October issue...I hafta write too many blurbs for "blessings of the animals" events.  If, as the xian churches teach, animals have no souls, then why bless them?  (Of course it's to get more sheeple into the flock, and fleece them, but still...)

Then there's the "Rainbow Bridge" glurge. I have an atheist friend whose 17 year-old kitteh just died, and somebody sent that to her.  She wanted to slap them...at least.

As G.B. Shaw said, "The worst thing you can say about a person is that they mean well."
