Went shopping for b-i-law's cat - bought big ceramic bowls; she drinks a lot.

Comment by Plinius on Saturday

Good points, thanks! I'll find other bowls.

I use a ceramic bowl suitable for human foods.

Stainless steel is NOT a safe material for pet food or water dishes, it's just cheap:

*******************************************

4. Stainless steel bowls are better and safer than other materials -- False. Source: See this reference .

Implications: There are over 150 grades of stainless steel that contain various amounts of nickel and chromium which can be toxic when released from poorly made stainless steel. Stainless steel loses its desirable properties when submerged in water such as when used as a watering bowl for pets.

If a safe grade of stainless steel was used to make a safe stainless steel bowl, that bowl could cost hundreds of dollars. Hexavalent chromium was the chemical that was causing birth defects and cancer in the Erin Brockovich story.
Sources: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stainless_steel, www.treehugger.com/files/2010/12/hexavalent-chromium-erin-brockovic...

The idea is to get cats (and dogs) to drink more water to prevent kidney problems, which are a major cause of premature death in small animals.  I can't count the number of cats (both mine and guests at the Cat Hotel) who needed subcutaneous hydration treatments due to kidney failure.  It's effing heartbreaking.

Ever since I bought the fountain, I have observed my own cats drinking 2 or 3 times the amount of water that they did previously (And I always used to use microwavable glass dishes for their water....so I could sanitize them.  NEVER stainless steel!)

"But what's the point?", the stupid foreigner asked...

You don't want to leave your cats alone for days on end, so when you're home, it's no trouble to scrub a stainless steel bowl and refill it with tapwater. I never heard a cat complain about that. I also think that it's difficult to keep that fountain clean.

I'm not trying to sell y'all anything, but this IS the perfect pet fountain....100% USA-made, with NO toxic materials, and Barry Ferris really does answer his own phone, no matter what time you call him.

The initial cost seems like a lot, but you save a great deal in vet bills and stuff over time...I can't even remember when I bought my cats' fountain...more than 5 years ago; that's all I know.

Interesting, booklover. The daffodil field reminds me of a kitten of ours who destroyed a dozen roses.

On a lighter note,
