I suspect everyone in this group is already familiar with the territory covered on this BBC related website, but just in case...

"The meow - everybody knows that cats meow, but they only do it to humans. Cats don't talk to each other using meows at all, and we'll explain why later in the section on cat psychology. The meow generally means that the cat wants something from the human, perhaps to go out, or in, or out again, or some food. Food is always welcome."

Good stuff. I've always wondered (and laughed) about the chatter my cats make when staring intently at birds through my back window. Too bad nobody knows why the hell they do that...
I wouldn't doubt that someone will figure it out soon. I have a more scholarly study of cat behaviour squirreled away on my computer somewhere. When/if I find it, I'll post.
This is their attempt at bird calls, just like duck hunters use their weird kazoos.
I like this explanation, so I'm going to go with it.
Yeah, I hadn't heard people talk about that or the trilling.
Cats only meow for humans? Have they evolved this way? Wouldn't kittens meow at least? Also, I saw a documentary of a leopard and it was doing the low-voiced equivalent of "meow".
Hmm, I don't know about the statement that cats only meow with us and not with each other. I suppose it depends on how you define meow and at what point it stops being a meow and starts being a yowl.

I've been a dog person all my life and am fairly new to true cat employment (I almost said ownership, but it is they who own/employ us). I'm learning the difference between their various meows.

Diablo for instance has a distinct meow which means, "I love you. Cuddle me. Pet me. Love me. I want snuggly attention" and a very, very slightly different variant for "Fuck you, don't fucking touch me. Try it you filthy fucking primate and I WILL slash your goddamn ugly nose off your fucking face."

Very, very slight difference between the two. It has taken me and my now-altered nose a few months to learn the difference.

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 6:15pm 1 Comment

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…

Anti-atheist post from an Orthdox Mormon

What do you think of this Facebook comment?

Nathan Young to Jason Torpy,

for once you and I can agree on something.  We should disrespect beliefs that are untenable such as the belief that there is no God.  Indeed for me to respect you Jason, I cannot respect your belief in non-belief in atheism.  Your atheism comes across as arrogrance, smugness, and self righteous.  Indeed after reading "An Open Letter to My Religious Friends" I penned one…
