What's wrong with there being theists in the world? As long as they're not forcing you to join them, it's ok, right? ..Wrong.. This group is to share thoughts about the dangers of theism -- and through the discussion, to be armed to enlighten others.

I've tried not to be hostile towards theism, not that I think it is something to be tolerated or protected, but bc I once was a theist.  I know that if an anti-theist like Hitchens would get going I…Continue

Patricia, regarding your "oh-groan write-up," the following was one of the finalists in the Center for Inquiry Blasphemy Contest of a few years back:

I wouldn’t even follow your god on Twitter.

Shermer had a nice idea.  Shame is that Morris West had it first with his book and subsequent movie, The Shoes of the Fisherman.  No one wanted to hear that back then, either.

Oh! the wisdom of the ages Patricia and Loren

Fascist: tells people how to think and act.

Religion: where knowledge ends, religion begins.

Sometimes even priests run up against their own bullshit, eh, Patricia?

What I hate about theists is that they invade your space and ask if you are saved by the blood of Bubbles (aka Jesus Christ)?

I have been reading through the posts. Very good graphics and I like the 8 premises Joan. Prayer is futile. I agree.

Hell, yeah, I'll call a doctor ... and when you've got the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals within shooting distance, that actually MEANS SOMETHING!

That was an excellent alternative, and I'm glad there was family consensus.  Death is prime-time for religious folks.  Lots of fear and obedience.

It's regrettable that atheists have to develop strategies for dealing with believers.  But their strategies for dealing with us - torture, murder, condemnation, ostracism -- have been well-practiced for millennia.  We're newcomers to the argument and have to play catch-up.  I'm thinking of George Carlin's challenge to God to smite him and his audience.  God decided to do neither, surprise, surprise.

And how do I deal with my Judaism-lite family (I keep thinking ahead to Mom's funeral), whose beliefs are shaky and practices superficial?  I love these people, but I have just as much contempt for this as for hard-core believers.
