I view Theism as a perversion of what was probably a necessary part of the evolvement of humans from the family through group, tribe, and clan to community or nation.

In the family structure the role of leader was well defined but, as humanity increased numerically, and lived closer together, different structures were needed to ensure the processes which enable groups to survive, function and increase were applied. The "Law Giver" was granted supernatural status to enforce the codes which enabled large groups of humans to congregate without becoming embroiled in violence, rape, incest and other self-destructive forms of dominance. It also allowed some respect and defence of the submissive, oppressed and "untouchable" strata.

Naturally, this was perverted over time by the usual power and money hungry people who continue to have laws enacted to protect their "omni-everything" (maybe omni-omni?) deities. If gods have all these powers and attributes why the fuck do they need laws to protect them and their minions? After all, religion is like walking, driving and sex – it has to be taught by a practitioner to a student, it isn't a natural response.

I favour the stripping of all protection and concessions from religion and the classification of religion with the same status as any other community group such as line dancing, karate or theatre groups. I know this is most unlikely when the control so much of politics the world over but I can fantasise – can't I?

One of the most heinous things about religions is that they are protected by law from vilification, yet they have no rational proof of the supernatural. They also are allowed to proclaim that other individuals and groups should be discriminated against because "god" says so. Even though this illogical situation is well known no attempt has been made to rectify the anomaly.
