Bill H.R. 1540 passed last night with a nearly unanimous vote. For those of you living under rocks, this bill is the National Defense Authorization Act, which is renewed every year, but which this year includes the declaration that "the entire USA is a “battleground” upon which U.S. military forces can operate with impunity, overriding Posse Comitatus and granting the military the unchecked power to arrest, detain, interrogate and even assassinate U.S. citizens with impunity." - source

The bill merely awaits Obama's signature, and although he has threatened to veto it, here is proof from CSPAN2 that the language exempting Americans from military impunity was removed AT HIS REQUEST. He will pass this bill, and America will officially become a military dictatorship. This will mean that, on suspicion of support for any entity that opposes US doctrine, you may be arrested, detained without trial, tortured and killed.

We have a few days before the bill is signed into law. I urge everyone to raise as much of a fuss as you possibly can, because it will be illegal for you to raise a fuss after the bill is signed. I also urge everyone to become non-cooperative with this government. Stop paying your taxes, stop paying your mortgage, pull your money out of the stock market and buy precious metals, and become as self-sufficient as you possibly can. Help and encourage others to do so as well. You are the only one who can protect each other: the police and military are now your enemies! Load your guns and discuss emergency plans with your freinds, family and neighbors. We are on our own.

Yeah, that's exactly the type of shit I'm talking about. In fact, I just made that same argument to someone who suggested I get off the grid instead of complaining about society. There is a decent parallel to the advent of air travel. In the sixties, the planes weren't full, the food/service was great, the bureaucracy/red-tape was minimal, FLYING WAS GREAT. Air travel was the great liberator, today, it is completely controlled and profiled and integrated with borders, immigration, customs, police, flight information. All this information is digitally cross-referenced, errors and unfairness included.

You mention getting off the grid... I don't believe that's really possible any more. They now use heat sensing satellite data to track pot plantations in the middle of forests in the middle of nowhere. At this point in civilisation, if the powers that be want to find you, they will... :(

I think for the first few decades of its life, the internet grew too quickly for its creators to control it, and the younger generation's ability to manipulate it outstripped anyone else's ability prevent them. But now they are figuring out ways to lock the internet down, and once it's locked down, the temporary freedom it has provided will be gone. We are alive in a rare time, where we actually got to experience what it was like to be uncontrolable. If we don't fight to keep that state of affairs, we may never experience it again. Exactly, information technology, in the end, serves power, not the people. The information highway it was for its first decade of life was no different from a drug pusher's front, to get people hooked to the drug. Now the axe starts to fall.

Sure, but what happens when your internet gets shut down? That's what's happening in China, in Syria, in Iran, in North Korea, and guess who provides the technology to do that? US. Tht signifies to me that our government is testing the efficacy of these devices elsewhere, where thye don't care if civil unrest is the result because that just strengthens their positions anyway. And once the kinks are worked out, and SOPA passes, they'll be deploying that equipment right here, and there goes your social communication tools. There goes any power the people have to organize and rebel against the atrocities.

I tend to be less worried about technology than most people, because it looks like most of the nasty stuff is very expensive to build and energy-intensive to use, whereas the communications and computer technology that tends to impower individuals more that it empowers groups gets cheaper to build and more energy-thrifty all the time...

Hi everyone. I just joined the group, though I've been active on AN for a while now. I was looking around the web for some anarchist sites because of my growing concerns about the ability of governments around the world to enforce their laws on people, and was glad to be led right back here by an errant link.

 

I keep close watch on technological development around the world, archiving dozens of articles daily, and I am becoming downright scared by some of what I'm reading between the lines. For example, I see this article, titled Future Wars May Be Fought by Synapses, which details a few examples of how we will soon be able to manipulate functions of the brain, including behavior. Or this article, titled Zapping the Brain with Magnets Makes it Impossible to Lie, which is self-explanatory. Or this article, titled Airforce Wants Ray Guns for Weed Prevention, which details the potential for long-range manipulation of biochemistry, which might make it impossible to grow weed anywhere, ever, because wavelengths disruptive to their growth could bombard the whole earth from orbit.

 

So what's to prevent some government/corporation from figuring out the chemical combinations of thoughts and emotions (as in this article) and FORCING us to behave as they want us to, all the while allowing us to feel like it is our own inclination driving the change in our behaviors? That kind of technology is not in the news yet, but the precursors to it are, and rest assured, if I can think of it so can someone who wants to implement it. It would never be anounced in the news, of course, so we must extrapolate from what news we are given, just what capabilities might be out there, or are about to be.

 

I have a growing sense of urgency that the Occupy movement may well be the last stand of the people, and that if they put us down this time, we may never be able to get back up again. Conspiritorial? Yes. But with all the advances I've seen every day over the last decade, it is far from impossible. And if it's possible, we should be watching out for it, conspiritorial or not, because those in power are drunk with it, and will do anything they can to maintain their sway.

 

Is anyone else as concerned as I am?
