Tell U.S. Envoy to Sudan Scott Gration: No More Arms to Sudan!

The Obama Administration recently announced its long-delayed policy on Sudan, which talks about combining "pressures and incentives" to meet its goals. During his first seven months as U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan, J. Scott Gration has privileged a policy of engagement with the Sudanese goverment, talking about how "gold stars and smiley faces" are the key to change in Sudan. He has derided sanctions as ineffective, but the reality is that there are sanctions in place that are not being enforced.

An upcoming report by the U.N. Panel of Experts is expected to provide more solid evidence of numerous violations of the arms embargo – illegal sales of arms and ammunition that have been left unpunished. This presents an opportunity for the U.S. to assert real pressure as part of its new Sudan policy – by ensuring discussion and action at the United Nations to enforce the embargo and stop the flow of arms fueling the crisis in Darfur.

Ask U.S. Envoy Gration to stop criticizing an untested system and impose consequences on those putting arms in the hands of war criminals. Write him today to ask that he make the arms issue a priority now.
