Fort Hood massacre: jihad or mental illness?

Seems to have been several disappointing results this time around. The intense high that motivated progressive voters in '08 seems to have been dashed in part due to the Obama admin not living up to the hype of the campaign. In addition, all the intense fear-mongering by the tea-bag crazies probably created a corresponding rebound motivation on the right.

Thanks Dan, I have noticed it helps me organize my position & my statements. One other thing I've noticed is they all seem to say the same thing, which in turns helps me lead them into positions they cannot reasonably get out of. Then they revert to the fact that I just don't get it. They 'know' why the believe and that 'god' is good for them and maybe one day I'll 'see the light'.... As to point #3, I can only hope that's true.

Bryan - If I may add my 2 cents. It is not an excercize in futility. I think calm, rational discussions (even if you are the only rational one) with theists has three benefits.
1. It helps you to think critically about your own positions, and helps you to build a world view more closely aligned with reality. The more you think, and challenge, and attempt to integrate new information, the more enlightened you will become.
2. Is there anyone else listening? Some atheists won't discuss/debate with a theist unless they are in a group setting. If there is a fence sitter as a bystander, and they hear your calm, rational discussion, you just may help keep them from falling down the rabbit hole of faith.
3. The seeds you plant today may bear fruit in a future season. Leaving religion can be a long process. You never know what idea or issue may linger in the theist's mind that may lead to full fledged skepticism later on.

As Winston Churchill once said..."Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever give up!"

Honestly, one of them could "rift" all she wants, and neither I nor my wife would be that upset. The other one is a big wimp. She's not likely to make a stink over it. She'll just pray harder. She's good at compartmentalizing that way.

It is true that many people take the path of religion to lead them out of destructive life styles. It is also true that people can do the same thing without a reliance on faith (you just don't hear about it as much). You sound like a very nice you…

I've seen posts about the 50 commandments of jeebus put out by xtians that cite chapter and verse and you really don't need a commentary to go along with them. Boy it sure does kill the whole GOP/Tea Party platform.
