Hi Brian,

Thanks for your critique. You may very well be correct that this book contains some errors--I will check on the things you've listed. As I think we mentioned on the show, neither David nor I have had time to read the ENTIRE book--we just read several random entries. In what I read nothing jumped out at me as incorrect, but that's sampling for you. Anyway, thanks for the note, and thanks for listening to the podcast!

I just listened to the "God's Lunatics' episode and I gotta say, I'm really disappointed that you like this book so much. It is filled with errors! I don't mind the completely credulous tone of the book, why alienate the potential religious reader? So if St. Drogo can be in 2 places at once, fine, it's a story. But just a couple pages away from St. Drogo is an entry on divining rods. Not only do they work but skeptics think they work by "heat, magnetic fields, or minerals emanating from water or oil sources"! No skeptic believes that.
Scientologists aren't trying to rid themselves of thetas. They are trying to rid themselves of Thetans.
The Jonestown cultists drank grape Flavor-aid, not Kool-aid.
The Bermuda Triangle doesn't have an above average rate of lost or sunken ships, no reputable scientist thinks 'methane bubbles' are to blame for anything that happens there.
That's all pretty small time stuff, but when he mentions the West Memphis Three as a trio of Satan worshipping kids that murdered three 8 year old boys I found a damn good place to put that book down and never pick it up again.
I got all this from casually flipping through the book, I'm sure there is plenty more garbage in there. Mr. Largo should do more research and keep his spell checker in check.

Oddly, your link as written in the post was not the hyperlink that the browser went to. Either copy and paste the actual words of the link into your browser, or try clicking here: http://www.americanfreethought.com/wordpress/essential-freethought-library/

Wyoming is better than the southeast, from what I've seen. It's still a solid red state, though. My big point was that there are no cities. The closest it has are Cheyenne and Casper, each of which are around 50,000 people. The entire state barely…

It's weird, but I never had the typical reaction to atheists when I was a believer. Oh sure, they were headed for hell, but I didn't presume to know or understand the reasons *why* they didn't believe. I didn't auto-dismiss them or hate their existe…
